Hermione walked into the common room with the books of her last class in hand as the clock struck 5pm for the third time that day. She had planned to lock herself in her dorm and reverse time for an hour to study but she was too tired to do it now. Today had been one hell of a day and by today; she meant the meeting with professor Lupin. She had spent the entire day trying to distract herself from what he had said but she couldn't avoid her problems anymore.

She sat down on a couch and sighed loudly when she saw Ron come in through the portrait hole. She hoped he didn't stir up some drama about his half dead rat again. She hoped he would go to the dorms but he came straight to her.

"Hey where did you go? One moment you were right beside us and the next moment, you just vanished."

"I went to the loo."

"How did you get here before me then? I came straight to the common room."

"I took a shortcut."

"fine"

"Where's harry?"

"he went on a walk"

"Alone? You know how dangerous it is for him. He cant be out alone with Sirius black on the run."

"Relax Hermione . He is not going to leave the castle grounds. Hogwarts is the safest place in the wizarding world. I think he needs a moment to relax with all this going on."

Hermione let out a huff and began taking out her books. Ron pulled the bag away from her hands, "Hermione"

"yes" she said angrily

"What is going on with you?"

"What do you mean? I'm fine."

"You're not fine Hermine. You are tired and stressed out all the time. Your class schedules make no sense and you keep disappearing."

"That's not true, Ron I'm totally fine."

"Then what about the house elf incident?"

"What house elf incident?"

"You summoned a house elf yesterday in front of my eyes. Don't try to deny that or have you forgotten about it already because of your busy schedule?"

Hermione had in fact forgotten about that. She had wanted to ask professor Lupin about it but had forgotten about it. She had also forgotten to ask him who her real father was.

"That was nothing"

"Oh it was nothing? Then prove it, summon him right now."

"I cant."

"Why not?"

"Because professor Lupin told me not to"

"What exactly did professor Lupin tell you about Hermione? You seemed pretty confused after your talk with him yesterday and Seamus told me that you were in the headmaster's office after that."

The events of the last two days had finally caught up on her and her eyes filled with tears. She looked away from Ron to hide them from him.

"I just want you to be okay Hermione and that even though you have a monster from hell for a pet, I still care about you" she looked at him and wondered if he really meant it "and so does harry '' he added awkwardly.

"I'm not a Muggle born." She whispered.

"WHAT?"

"I –"

"I heard what you said but—. How long have you known this?"

"From this morning. Well, kind of."

"What do you mean by kind of?"

"My dad told me I was adopted when I first got my Hogwarts letter. So I knew there was a possibility that my real parents were wizards. I had always hoped so."

"So did you get to know who your real parents are?"

"Professor Lupin told me they died in the war. He knew my mum." She decided against telling him that she was adopted by professor Lupin first because she didn't know if he would be comfortable with it.

" I'm sorry, Hermione," he said, wrapping an arm around her.

"It's ok Ron. I still have my parents"

"But wait, you summoned a house elf yesterday."

"Yes"

"So that probably means that you're from a pureblood family, or a wizarding family that is very rich. And you are probably the last remaining person of the bloodline and that is why the house elf wanted to come to you even though you don't have any contact with the family."

"I'll ask professor Lupin about it tomorrow. I'm going to write a letter to my mum now."

"Ok "

Dear mum,

It's been quite a while since I last wrote to you. I hope you and papa are doing fine. I'm doing great here.

I've been so busy with all the subjects this term but I do not regret it because I'm learning a lot. I may regret divination because it is not a real subject.

I'm writing to let you know about something that I found out recently. My birth mother was a witch. She died after I was born. One of my professors, Remus Lupin, was her friend and he had looked after me for a while after that before I was adopted by you guys. I don't know many details about it but I am going to find out soon.

Write to me about what you think about all this.

Love, Hermione.

Hermione stared at the letter on her desk. She had already written and discarded a dozen letters and she did not like this one any more than any of the others. It sounded too distant and weird. She wished she could talk to her mum in person and tell her what she was feeling.

The relationship she had with her parents had strained a little after she had left to Hogwarts. They didn't really understand what she was doing and when she had told them that she wanted to pursue a wizarding career and not go to oxford or Yale like they had planned, they had been disappointed. They only considered magic as a plaything and didn't realize that she belonged to this world now and that she did not want to have a muggle career.

She had often wondered how her birth parents were. That maybe one day they would come for her and they would live happily ever after. She had wondered if she had any other siblings or cousins, maybe some of them were currently in Hogwarts. She was fascinated about Ron's house, how the dishes did themselves and the various magical objects around the house that performed different tasks.

She had imagined that her family would have been like that but maybe that was because Ron was her only best friend who had a wizarding family. She and Harry would have had that too if Voldemort had not killed their parents. Maybe her parents and Harry's parents had been friends. She needed to tell Harry about this.
