Remus was oddly nervous to meet Hermione's parents. They had set up to meet in a restaurant in muggle London. He had made up some excuse to Dumbledore about why he wanted to talk to Hermione's parents.

Hermione arrived on time to Remus's office from where they took a floo to the Leaky Cauldron and then walked to the restaurant. Remus knew that Hermione's parents were ready to rain him with questions.

When they entered the restaurant, Hermione led him to a mid-aged couple sitting in the corner of the room.

"Mum, dad, this is my professor, Remus lupin."

"Good evening Mr. Granger" he said and shook his hand.

"Good evening Mr. Lupin."

"Oh call me Remus"

"So Remus, you teach in Hogwarts."

"Yes, I teach Defense Against Dark Arts. Only for this year though."

"Why that?", "You're leaving next year," said Mrs. Granger and Hermione at the same time.

"Yes, I was requested by the headmaster to fill in for this year. I don't think I'll need to be here next year."

"Don't say that, you are the best Defense Against Dark Arts professor that we have ever had. You can't leave"

"I'll think about it, Hermione."

"I'm very thankful to you Mr. and Mrs. Granger for taking care of me-- her for all these years."

"Of Course we did. She's our daughter" said Mr. Granger.

"So Remus, how did you know Hermione's birth parents?" asked Mrs. granger.

"We were friends in school."

"And she said you adopted her before us."

"Well not on paper. After Marlene died, me and Hermione's dad moved in together to look after her."

"Can you please explain what really happened in detail. You turned up out of nowhere twelve years later and claim to know her. You must understand how it all sounds from our side"

"Of Course I do Mr. Granger. You're just looking out for your daughter and I understand that. I would do the same thing."

"Oh would you? Because from my angle, it looks like you abandoned her."

"I will explain Mrs. Granger. Do you know about the first wizarding war?"

"A little bit. Hermione told us that there was a tyrant who tried to take over the government but he was defeated by Harry's parents."

"Yes, that war was already in full swing by the time we graduated and me and my friends joined the war efforts. There are no legal documents of Hermione's birth because we didn't want her to be a target in case something went wrong and the government was compromised. She was the daughter of two of the most important members of our team and if the other side knew of her existence, then they would have tried to target her just like they did Harry."

"That.. makes sense."

"Yes. Hermione's mother was killed a month after her birth. She wasn't even supposed to be back on the field but she heard that a muggle village was being attacked so she came in with backup and she didn't make it."

"Hermione was quietly looking down at her plate. Her eyes were teary. Her mother put her arm around her. "Continue Mr. Lupin," she said.

"You sure Hermione?"

"Yes."

"After that horrible incident, we moved in together and I became Hermione's guardian. I couldn't legally adopt her because her father was still alive but we performed a ceremony and all. After that, life seemed fine for a year, or at least as fine as it can be when you are in the middle of a war."
