Context: Energy source. I had a partner for this and we did really well. It just talks about the energy source such but it's ok.

How it Creates Energy

Steam.

The steam, from hot water below the surface, rotates a turbine that activates a generator, then it produces electricity.

Current Consumption

Currently, 0.4% of the US's electricity generation is derived from geothermal energy. The US still generated more than 3.5 gigawatts of geothermal electricity

Changes

"Cascaded"- refers to the fluid that flows from the highest temperature to produce electricity through processes that require less heat. This process is commonly used in industrial applications.

Potential Capabilities

Companies are testing various technologies to improve the efficiency of their operations.

One of these is the use of artificial intelligence to minimize the need for maintenance.

Dealing with heat is difficult because the walls of the well will expand.

Future Use

The most promising systems for the future are ones that are the third generation, things like EGS (Enhanced Geothermal System).

This can create lots of energy from sites that were unusable before.

It improves energetic efficiencies

Pros:

1. Environmentally Friendly -Overall when compared to Fossil fuels

2. Renewable -Always water

3. Huge potential

4. Heating and Cooling -Change in temperature

5. Sustainable / Stable -Reliable b/c there is always an income of water

6. Reliable -Easy to calculate since it does not fluctuate.

Cons:

1.Environmental Side Effects -Digging.

2. Location Restricted -Hot underground water

3. Earthquakes -Triggering

4. High Costs -$2-$7 million

5. Sustainability -Water needs to be pumped back into the underground reservoirs faster than it is depleted

Rating

8/10

There is a lot of potential for this geothermal but as of right now there are some issues and it's not the most efficient. As stated in the Pros and Cons there are things like restricted location and high costs.
