"When I forced you to do that, it was because I-I wanted to see you come." Mew squeezed tight the hand pressed against his chest. "But I didn't think about how you would felt and let myself get carried away. I totally understand why you were ignoring ne. I figured that if I were you, I wouldn't want to be on a team with a horrible guy like me, even for school. So I wasn't going to participate."

Mew's expression changed. Strength came back into his eyes and fixed them on Gulf. " I want to know how you feel."

Mew took a single step toward him.

"I want to know why you were bothering so much with me."

"B-Because Sir Suzushima asked me to."

"I don't think he told you to help me with my exams."

Gulf jerked his head up in surprise. When Suzushima called him in to talk about his exams, he said he'd talked to Mew. Gulf had no way of knowing what the conversation between the two of them had been like, but Mew probably already known about the first deal between Suzushima and Gulf.

"So maybe he didn't ask me to do it, but I'm the class representative. I have an obligation to make you fit into the class."

"Is that why?" Mew came even closer, turning Gulf's words back on him. "You went to so much trouble for me because you're the class representative? And that's why you helped me with the exams?"

"But that---that's not---"

"What is it then?"

Mew's eyes bored into Gulf, squeezing Gulf's heart in their powerful grip, refusing to let him off the hook. The hand he held in his own was burning hot, Mew's warmth traveling through his entire body.

"Mew---" The smell of tobacco stalled Gulf's thoughts.

"I just want to know how you feel," Mew said in a low voice. "Why do you bother with me? I can't understand it. Cut me loose if tha'ts what you want, before I get the wrong idea."

He raised Gulf's hand to his mouth and gently brought it to his lips. Mew's eyelids were lowered as he did, clouding Gulf's vision with the effusive charm of his expression. The instant that the tips of his fingers grazed Mew's lips, a shock like an electric current shot through Gulf's body.

"I like you---" Mew's lips touched him again. "I really like you."

Again, they touched. Not only Gulf's fingers, but all the way to his heart. Gulf's mind convulsed under the ardent sensation.

He wondered for so long about his feelings for Mew. He held doubts that reached no conclusions. This hazy cobweb of feelings in the deepest part of his heart couldn't be explained away by pretending that they were just friends.

Gulf had always rejected the idea. He'd decided in his mind that it couldn't be that. But apparently the barrier that Gulf had run up against didn't exist inside Mew, since he had so easily overcome it to arrive here, now, before his eyes.

"Mew---"

Maybe it would be okay. Maybe Gulf could overcome that barrier too. Maybe he could allow himself to feel that way.

On the day before the exams, the worst part for him wasn't the fact that he'd been touched. It was that he was being toyed with as part of some meaningless joke devoid of emotions. He'd hated himself for climaxing so quickly at Mew's touch, but now he understood why he had.

It was impossible not to get excited by the touch of someone he liked so much. It was impossible not to get excited by the naked body of someone he liked so much.

"What do you feel about me, Gulf?" At some point, Mew wrapped his hands around both of Gulf's. Held so tenderly, the warmth of these emotions began to spill into his heart. Gulf believed he could follow them.

"I---"

"You like me?" Mew cut him off before he could finish.

"How can you interrupt someone when they're saying something so important?" The embarrasment Gulf had been struggling to contain burst out of him. They were standing in the front door of the school. There was no telling when someone would come by. They were standing in plain view, facing each other and holding hands. And Mew kept kissing his hands over and over.

"Am I wrong?"

"Oh, for crying out loud! Let me go!"

"No." Mew refused eagerly. "I'm not going to let you go until you say once and for all how you feel about me."

"Oh my God." Gulf was losing control. "Doesn't it count that I tried to say it before you cut me off?"

"So you were going to say that you like me?" Mew squeezed both of Gulf's hands tightly and pulled him closer. At the sight of Mew's face right in front of him, Gulf's heart began to pound.

"What---"

"I want to hear you say it. Please say it! Tell me that you like me."

His eyes burned, gazing at Gulf. They seemed to see him into the depths of his heart, jolting it, and Gulf almost felt like he could say it.

But he fought back from the temptation and shook his head.

"I can't do that in a place like this," he said, dropping his head, but not allowing any argument.

"Where then?"

"Somewhere we can be alone," Gulf said in an almost imperceptible voice, announcing his feelings.

Gulf couldn't reason it away, he was in love with Mew. He was obsessed with him. He'd gotten excited by his touch. He tried to come up with some other reason for that, but it was pointless.

And it wasn't as if his reaction had been purely physical. When a man is touched, he gets excited. But he hadn't disliked it. He wanted to be touched more. And that could be nothing other than love.
