LANDRY
“Hey, Mama.” I barely got the words out before my mom’s arms were wrapped around me in a big hug. She pulled me back for a millisecond to give me a judgey look and then back into a hug.
“Landry, I swear to God, I am so angry at you.”
“I know you are, but in my defense, I’m really sorry.”
“I’m going to need to yell at you for a little bit longer before I accept your apologies.”
“Yes, ma’am, I hear you.”
When we got home from the hospital, Jasper told me he made a few phone calls, but I didn’t think about it too much at the time. He ended up calling my mom, for sure, because I woke up to a load of text messages from her. I knew she was going to want to see me today. After Jasper left, I called her back and she pretty much demanded that she come over. Even after I suggested that we meet somewhere for breakfast, she scoffed at my request, refusing to let me leave the apartment.
I offered to make us some tea, but she kicked me out of the kitchen and into the living room. She came in a few moments later with two hot mugs and the tea bags already steeping. “So, are we going to start at the beginning or what?”
“You’re wasting no time, huh?”
“When do I ever? Talk, girly. Jasper’s message told me a lot, but I want to hear it from you.”
“Okay, so I guess the first thing I noticed was a small bit of spotting. It was pink at first and I kind of ignored it. I know that it can be normal, my doctor has told me that a few times. Throughout the night, it slowly turned red. That’s when I started to get worried the most.”
“Why didn’t you call me, Landry!”
“I thought about it, but I figured that it would just over-worry you and I didn’t want to do that. I was just going to take it easy, but then these pains started shooting through the bottom of my stomach and that is when I called the doctor.”
“How did Jasper get involved?”
“I was going downstairs to head to the hospital..”
“Landry Paige! Were you planning on driving yourself?” I look into my mug of tea, refusing to answer her. “Girl, oh my gosh I should beat you with my shoe!”
“No need to get violent, I didn’t end up driving myself. Jasper was working in the shop for some reason and he saw me. He ended up taking me to the hospital.”
“Good, remind me to give him a hug.”
“I’ll be sure to do that.”
“What did the doctor say?”
“She thinks it was probably round ligament pain. Even though I didn’t do much yesterday, I still did more up and down the stairs and even light lifting than I normally do. She did an ultrasound and the baby was fine and she said my cervix wasn’t dilated or anything either.”
“God, I still cannot believe you didn’t tell me. You have to stop this.”
“I know, I know. I think last night and this morning were really eye-opening to me for a lot of reasons.”
“I’m glad to hear that. I should have expected it to take Jasper to finally hear what the rest of us have been saying.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I ask a bit too defensively.
“Oh, please. Did the two of you think you were living in a world where the rest of us didn’t see what was going on?”
“Nothing was going on between Jasper and me.”
