JASPER
After proposing to Landry and getting an enthusiastic yes from her, I wanted to pick up the phone and call all our friends and family to tell them. Landry convinced me that maybe that wasn’t the best idea just yet. She is VERY convincing, so it didn’t take much for me to agree. Her ring was just a bit too big, so the following day we took it to the jeweler who had made the ring for me and scheduled to have it resized. We agreed that after she got it back, we would tell our families. I loved our little secret, even though I really wanted to shout it from the rooftops.
“Hey bro, are you coming over to mom’s tonight?” Tate walked into the breakroom drenched in sweat. He dropped to the seat across from me and chugged down his water bottle.
“I was planning on it. Jetson said he was putting ribs on the smoker and I’m always a huge fan of that.”
“Hell yeah. I wonder if Hazel is going to make cheesecake. I should have Landry text her and ask.”
“Hazel and Darren are coming over too?”
“Yep. Landry and I asked if that was cool and of course, Mom said yes.”
Tate looked me up and down a few times and then a smile spread across his face, “What’s the big news?”
“What are you talking about? Just a family dinner, no big deal.”
“You’re so full of shit. Tell me.”
“I’m not saying jackshit, you’ll have to show up tonight to find out what is going on.”
Tate smirks, “So you DO have news?”
“I’m not saying anything.”
I hop up off my chair and slap my brother on his shoulder. He shoves me and drops a few curse words in my direction while I’m walking out of the room. I love being so close with my brothers. I’m sure not everybody would like working with their siblings and seeing them day in and day out, but I really enjoyed it. One of the best decisions I made in my life was to go into business with my brothers.
After a long day at work, I found my way upstairs and hit the shower right away. Landry left earlier with Everett to go spend some time with the girls at my mom’s place, I told her that I would meet her there for dinner. I pulled out a clean pair of jeans and a navy blue t-shirt. This wasn’t a dress-up occasion, but my mom likes to give me shit when I show up to places with my greasy jeans and a stained t-shirt. Based on the vehicles parked in the front when I pulled up in my truck, I was the last one there.
There was a lot of noise when I opened the door, but it was all the sound of a fun and loving household. My mom and Jetson were in the kitchen and I made my first stop there. I shook Jetson’s hand and then give my mom a big kiss on the cheek. “Hey Mama, everything looks amazing.”
“Aww, thank you, baby boy. You know I know I love to host little get-togethers. Even if you won’t tell me the special occasion.” She nudged her elbow into my side and I grinned. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if my mom already figured out what was up. I’m sure she’s been gossiping with Hazel since we contacted both moms a couple of days ago.
“Landry and I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. I love you.”
“I love you too, Jasper. It wasn’t just me though, Jetson did most of the cooking. He even put the potatoes in the smoker that I used for my potato salad.”
“Shit, that sounds amazing.”
My mom flicks me on the ear with her fingers, “Language, Jasper. We’ve got all sorts of children around here these days!” She chastises.
