JASPER

“WE NEED SOME HELP HERE!” Tate’s voice roared throughout the entire waiting room at the hospital getting everybody’s attention. I was right behind him, carrying Landry in my arms. The drive to the hospital wasn’t long, she opened her eyes a few times, but never long enough to say anything or have a conversation.

Two nurses came rushing from behind the station, one grabbing a bed that was pushed up against the wall. “Put her down here, sir.”

I didn’t want her out of my arms, but they sure as hell couldn’t treat her in my arms, so I had to give up some control. I laid her down and pressed a kiss against her forehead. “I love you, darling. Please wake up for me.”

“What’s her name, sir?” The second nurse says to me. She was typing on a tablet while asking questions.

“Her name is Landry Vogt. V-O-G-T. She was in here a few months ago for bleeding and abdominal pain, but they said it was just round ligament pain or something.”

“Okay,” she starts typing away, “And what symptoms is she having?”

“I don’t really know. I was home on my lunch break and she was sleeping. She’s been really tired, but she’s like thirty-six weeks pregnant so that’s normal, right?”

“It can be. Anything else?”

“She’s burning up, but I didn’t take her temp or anything. I just loaded her into my truck and brought her here. The baby was moving though, I would feel it on my way over here.”

“That’s good.” The nurse places her hand on my shoulder, “We’re going to take her back and page OB and have somebody check on her right away.”

“Okay, okay, can I go with her?”

“We’ll call you back when she’s stable.”

“But…”

“I’m sorry, sir, but that is hospital policy.”

“Come on, Jasper, let them do their jobs.” Tate grabs my arm and pulls me away from the bed. The two nurses push the bed through the double doors into the ER rooms. He was still holding me, but I refused to move, hoping that somebody would come back out with news for me. “Come on, Jas. Let’s sit down and start making some calls, okay?”

“Tate, I can’t…”

“Just take a breather, Jasper. I know it is scary, but the doctors are going to figure out what is wrong and they’ll take care of her and the baby.”

With a gentle tug, I followed behind my brother and took a seat in the most uncomfortable chairs ever. Tate tapped away at his phone, no doubt texting everybody the information. My phone began to buzz and Hazel’s name flashed on the screen. I hit the answer button as I was walking out the doors, “Hey,” I choked out.

“Bellamy just called, tell me what is going on!”

“I’m so sorry, I should have called, but I was so worried about getting her care,” I began to cry.

“Hey, listen to me, Jasper, you did the right thing. Are you at Mountain View?” Hazel asked.

“Yeah, that is where her doctor has rights.”

“That’s good. Darren and I are on our way. Tell me what happened.”

“So she was napping when I got home from work. I knew something was wrong, I could just feel it. She wasn’t waking up for me, even when I was shaking her.”

“Was she breathing?” Hazel asked, her voice cracking like mine.

“She was. Um, she had a fever and barely opened her eyes. She shouldn’t talk or walk. I carried her down to my truck. Tate was still working and said he’d drive so I could be with her.”
