"Forever is a lie, for all we have is what's in between 'hello' and 'goodbye'"
Her fists curled around the satin sheets, stained with her tears. They made their way down silently as she stared into oblivion. Her heart was breaking, yet again. Into a million pieces it shattered, she hadn't even been able to piece it back completely and it happened again.
She could still remember the warmth of his hand against hers, the way his thumb would casually run over her knuckles, the way he was the only one who could read the void behind her smile, the one who could recognise the longing in her voice and the sadness in her eyes. The one who would know the right things to say and the right time to stay silent and listen.
But she wouldn't feel so helpless again, she wouldn't let herself break and she for sure wouldn't give up.
The sound of the door opening brought her out of the torment, the familiar sound of bangles filled her ears as her sister settled herself next to her.
Her own payals jiggled as she readjusted herself on the floor, leaning back against the foot of the bed and letting her feet stretch out on the floor. Her muscles ached from the crouched position she had assumed before, drowned in her misery.
Her sister engulfed her in a side hug, "oho Tejo, let it go now, he was an idiot to leave you". Tejo rolled her eyes, "He was the only person I have ever loved, I was going to introduce him to the family. What a fool I was!"
Jasmine frowned, "Kya yaar Tejo, let it go na! I thought he would make the perfect jeeja cause he made you happy like no other but he decided to leave you, your love, his family for his stupid career, chadh na!"
"And anyways" Jasmine continued "He was not going to take you to Canada was he? He toh didn't have a Visa also"
How was Tejo ever supposed to explain to her sister that going to Canada was not her dream, she wanted to stay here, with her family. She had fallen in love and he had chosen his career, his dream job in Mumbai over their love.
"Waise pata hai" Jasmine's voice brought her out of her thoughts "I will only marry a guy who will prioritise me, a guy who will choose me over his family, over his career, over his dream. A guy who will fulfil my wish to live Canada."
Tejo smiled as her sister's eyes got dreamy at the mere thought of travelling to Canada. Jasmine's first and only love was Canada. From the young age of 3 she has seen everyone in her family only yearn for one thing and never receive it. She has noticed how her Taiji's eyes get watery every time she remembers her estranged daughter. The way her mothers eyes fill with longing for a place she has only heard of, and now will never be able to go to.
The dream that she has been seeing from birth is the one she is determined to fulfil, come what may, regardless of the price she may have to pay. Jasmine looked towards her sister, the tears that refused to stop. A guy who could not love her enough is not worth her tears.
Her sister was like a coconut, stern and rough on the outside but the sweetest, most tender and kind soul on the inside. Tejo didn't open up to people very easily but when she did she would love like no other. Sometimes Jasmine worried that Tejo loved too much, so much that she would forget herself in the bargain. And nothing was good in excess not even love.
Tejo on the other hand was always worried for Jasmine, being the older one she was protective of her younger half. Jasmine though only 2 years younger was childish and innocent. Her impulsiveness and stubbornness knew know bounds, she was a wild spirit doing as she wishes, saying what she wants.
Wiping her tears Tejo stood up "Oho, forget all of this I have work to do. There is so much preparation for tomorrows annual function"
Jasmine's eyes widened at the mention.
"Oh no! I completely forgot, mera dance rehearsal hai 4 baje" Tejo rolled her eyes at Jasmine's carelessness.
"I have to go to college to pick up some supplies, I'll drop you on the way. Be by my scooter in 20 minutes otherwise I am leaving without you!"
"Okay okay" saying so Jasmine practically sprinted out of the room not before muttering khadoos under her breath.
"I heard that" Tejo called after her only to receive silence in return.
"Jhalli" she said under her breath before smiling at her sisters antics.
The sisters were poles apart and yet shared a stronger bond than they realised, a bond that was thicker than blood, one that ran deeper than they could ever imagine. Both of them had their own flaws, cause that is what makes a person human. Flaws. These flawed yet beautiful sisters were just beginning an emotional rollercoaster.
Stepping out into the balcony Tejo let her tears flow freely, it wasn't that easy to forget the only person she had allowed in the depths of her heart.
Sounds from the field below filled her ears
"Tu bhi na, stop taking small things to heart. If someone broke your heart, but that doesn't mean you cant piece it back together. Now stop crying, tears don't suit you. Waise bhi, Pushpa I hate tears"
A small smile unknowingly crept onto Tejo's face, the coincidental yet such fitting words of a stranger had provided her comfort during her lowest. Leaning against the railing Tejo stretched in attempt to see the strangers face, but all she was met with was a tall back.
Silently thanking the stranger for his words and god for the perfect timing Tejo made her way inside.
