“You know, you’re really getting too comfortable sleeping here,” Stiles said, picking Derek’s jacket off the floor. Derek grunted at him and scribbled another word into his crossword. He’d hardly left Stiles’ apartment since Monday morning when they’d heard the story on the news. Stiles had been forced to call Scott and advise him to stay at Allison’s for a few more days. The awkward conversations never ended when Derek was the subject.
Stiles tossed the jacket at its owner. “You could at least pick up after yourself occasionally. Has anyone ever told you that you have no sense of organization?”
“Irritating,” Derek mumbled, barely glancing up from his crossword. Who would’ve guessed?
Stiles kicked Derek gently in the leg. “I’m irritating? You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“No, ‘irritating’. It’s on the crossword.” Derek’s eyes followed Stiles as he paced across the room. He frowned. “What’s wrong?”
Stiles shook his head. “Nothing. I just… I haven’t been sleeping well.”
Derek put his crossword down. “Because of the shooting?” he asked.
“No, I’ve been having these dreams about a woman,” Stiles said, frowning as he recalled her. He sat down on the floor, feeling the pressure of Derek’s eyes on him. “She chases me—not in a good way, in a serial killer kind of way—and when I’m finally cornered, she sets the ground on fire.”
Derek shifted uncomfortably. “What does she look like?” he asked.
Stiles traced the lines on his palms. “She has light brown hair—it’s kind of wavy, I think—and a round face. Her eyes are blue, I think. But she’s got this smile… I don’t know how to describe it, really. It’s… vicious. Like she’s some kind of animal.”
“Did you ever speak to her?” Derek asked him stiffly. He seemed to be resisting the urge to jump up and strangle the closest living thing, which in this case would be Stiles. Great.
Stiles frowned and looked up at Derek. “She told me her name was Kate,” he said slowly, as if in a daze. “That’s all.”
