"Can we adopt her, please?"

I took Leah's tiny hand, and took her to the park. Maybe an adorable puppy will cheer her up, I thought.
Back at the park, we saw Molly still chasing some birds. Leah giggled, and I smiled, since my idea worked. As soon as the dog saw us, it wagged its tail smoothly but fastly, and curiously runned towards us. The pup sit infront of us. I went down on my knees, and petted the animal.
"It won't bite", I told Leah with a calming voice.
She sat down next to me, and started petting the puppy. Molly, the dog, licked Leah's face gently and softly. She giggled, and I laughed.

Suddenly, I heard some music. It was my phone, vibrating like crazy.
7 missed calls from an unknown number? Now that's strange.
"Leah, I gotta make a quick call, okay? It'll take a minute.".
"Okay!" she answered, focused on playing with my dog.
I answered the call, and said;
"Hello? Who is this?".
"Evelyn! Where the hell are you?!", a male voice shouted. It sounded like...
"Mason?" I asked.
"Yes, now where are you ?!" he yelled.
"I'm at the park. What's wrong?"
"Send me your location.", he said, and I did so.
"Done" I told him, and he answered with "Stay wherever you are. I'm on my way.", and ended the call. I put my phone back in my bag, and turned back to Leah. I just realized, Leah had scratches and bruises all over her body. You poor soul, I thought.

After some time, I saw Mason running towards me.
"Evelyn!" he yelled.
I stood up. He runned into my arms, and hugged me tightly.
"Mason, what's going on?" I asked, worried.
"I couldn't find you anywhere. I freaked out.", he said, while taking fast breaths.
"I'm sorry, I should have told you that I left. I just didn't want to wake you up.".
"It's fine. What are you doing here, anyways ?" he asked slightly confused.
"I wanted to get some fresh air" I answered.
He held me tighter, and once again, his lips touched mine. I loved the feeling.
"Eww, love" Leah said with a disgusted voice.
I giggled, and let go of Mason.
"Sweetie, when you'll be older, you won't think like that anymore. Trust me, you will find your love one day hun', one day.." I said to her, and she smiled, but I don't think she understood. She focused on the dog again, and Mason asked;
"Evelyn, who's she ?"
"This is Leah. I found her in a dark alley in tears. Her father passed away infront of my eyes, and now she has no one. I made a promise that I would take care of her. Please Mason, can I adopt her?".
Mason looked at the girl, saying;
"Who will take care of her? We have school and work. I don't think it's a good idea, Evelyn."
A tear came out of my eye.
"Mason, she's only nine. She has no one but me. I can't just leave her in the middle of the city! Please, I'll take care of her! I'll do anything, just please, let me take her..", I almost yelled. Another tear fell out of my eye.
"Ugh, fine. But please stop crying, you know I hate to see you like that. Let's go back now." he finally said.
"Thank you" I said, wiping off my tears.

I put a leash on Molly, and held the leash in my left hand.
"Come on Leah, we're going now." I said. "Okay !" Leah answered, cheerfuly. I held her with my right arm. Mason was walking by my side.

While we were on our way back to the police station, I thought of something.
"How did you even get my number?"
I asked Mason.
"Your aunt gave it to me." he said.
"So she trusted you so easily with my personal information?" I asked.
"Well at first, she was asking questions, but when I said you went missing, she gave it to me momentally." he explained.
"Oh, now that makes sense" I answered. Suddenly, something or somoene pulled my jeans gently. I looked down. It was Leah.
"You need anything, sweetie?" I asked.
"Miss, I have a question." she said.
"Yes ?" I said.
"Is it okay if I call you 'Mommy' from now on ?" she asked.
"Uhh.. I don't mind. Of course you can, dear." I told her.
"And you can call me 'Daddy', okay?", Mason laughed. I blushed like crazy. "Mommy, why is your face all red like a tomato?" Leah asked.
Now Mason was litterally 'dying' of laugher, and I said "I-It's nothing you need to worry about, dear!", then smiled.

When we came back, we went to Mr. Houston's room. Leah sit on the bed, while I put Molly's leash off. I should probably clean Leah, and recover her scars and bruises, I thought.
"Mason ?" I said.
"Yeah ?" he then said.
"Is there a bathroom in this building?" I asked.
"Yes, there is. When you exit this room, just walk forward. Then the hallway will split into two ways. Go to the left. Nextly, walk forward again, and on the right side there should be door with a door sign 'Bathroom'.", he explained.
"Okay, thanks. Be right back! C'mon Leah." I said. She jumped of the bed, and came to me. I held her palm, and we left.
I followed the directions Mason gave me.

When we came to the bathroom, I gave Leah a warm bath, while she way popping the bubbles that the soap made.
When we were done, I recovered her scars, and put soft cream on the bruises. After that I brushed her hair and put it into two ponytails.

When we were done, we left the bathroom. As we were walking down the hallway, I stopped, knelled down, and whispered to Leah;
"Do you know how to get back to the room by yourself?"
"I think so, yeah" she answered.
"Great. I have to do something really important. I'll be back in a minute. Be a good girl, okay ?" I said.
"Okay mama!" Leah said with her pure voice.

While Leah was on her way back to Houston's room, I was walking in the oppossite way.
The papers. They were so important to Mason yesterday. What did he mean by 'We aren' t safe'? I have to get the papers. That's my main mission for now. But how? I should probably sneak into Mr. Houston's office. And when? I'll go tonight, when everyone will be asleep (hopefully), I thought while walking through the long halls.
