It was about a three and a half hour drive to Dublin. We decided not to stop until we got into the city, traffic was good, not too busy but not a complete ghost town. We made small talk for a while, however for most of it just sat in silence. But not awkward silence. Somehow the silence was comfortable. He took the first exit into the city. I could feel him staring at me whenever the lights turned red. I kept staring out the window. I thought he was having regrets about this, about me.
"Are you okay?" I looked at him with a concerned look."Have you given up on us? Do you think we've made a mistake?"
He looked at me eyes widened, mouth half open.
"Babe, where did you get this idea? Of course I haven't given up on us, I never will. And I don't only think we've made a mistake, I know we haven't."
"Sorry, its just you were looking at me..." He cut me off mid sentence.
"Because your beautiful, even though your past is shit. Your like a daisy. Even though people constantly step on you, you sprout right back up. I admire you, that's why I stare at you, not because I'm giving up or because I think we made a mistake, because I adore you."
"Im sorry...I just thought that... Oh I don't know what I thought, I guess I thought you'd give up on me like everyone else did."
"I could never give up on you, even if I wanted to, you'd keep pulling me back to you."
Tears filled my eyes and he handed me a tissue. I never had someone who cared so much about me, who saw the best in me, apart from Lexi. It was nice to have someone else.
We pulled into the supermarket, he took out his phone and rang someone. He discussed various ingredients and household items, he hung up as soon as the discussion was over, no goodbye or thank you.
"Who was that?"
"Housekeeping, I forgot to make a list of what I needed to get."
"Oh, ok." He grabbed a trolly and made his way inside phone in hand. He threw his phone into his pocket and took my hand. I began to get nervous, a lot of people were staring. Somehow he sensed this and rubbed his thumb up and down my hand.
The shopping was done within 30 minutes and we now had a trolley full, and a smaller one full of alcohol. The total came to €128.47. I almost died when I heard how much. He paid in cash. I laughed to myself. God we look more and more suspicious everyday. He bagged the groceries after slapping my hand away from helping and carried 5 shopping bags, wallet and keys in his mouth. Yet he was still beautiful. And he was mine. And he loved me back. He stacked the bags on top of one another in the boot and got into the car. His house was about 25 minutes away. We talked about dinner and his house. We pulled into his driveway. Another car was here. I looked at him.
"My mums here. Fuck." He began to climb out of the car, I followed quickly.
"Is this a bad thing?"
"Shes a stubborn bitch no one can live up to her standards."
"Oh..." I took a deep breath as he took my hand and we walked in.
