I walked up the long wide corridors. I hated this place it reminded me so much of when I was younger. I quickly wiped those memories from my head as Jason took my hand, a deep breath and walked into the room. She lay on the bed, asleep. It didn't even look like her. Her face was bruised and cut, as was the rest of her body. I say in the chair and tears rolled down my face. Jason sat on the armrest and put his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close, all i could do was throw my arms around his waist and cry into his stomach.
Marcus walked in as I looked up.
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
I looked up in confusion only to realise that he was talking to Jason. Jason quickly stood up from the armrest and stood close to Marcus. I put my hand in between them both.
"Stop, don't you dare fight in front of her, I don't care if shes asleep or not, don't."
"Well, what is he doing here then?"
Marcus snapped back quickly furiously darting his eyes at Jason who had just put his arm back around my shoulder.
"We're together, he drove me here we had gone off for a while to get away from the shit around here."
Marcus stood quiet for the rest if the time we were there. We left around 7, she hadn't woken all day, doctors said she was too weak. I sat in the car with Jason as we figured out who's house we were going to stay in, we finally decided on mine. As much as I hated my mother I had to check on her.
We drove slowly through the town, I began to ask him what the beef was between him and Marcus. He didn't answer. I left it. The last thing I needed today was an argument. We finally pulled up in my driveway. The door was locked, I walked around the back, climbed in the window then went to the front to let Jason in. I looked around for my mam. Nowhere to be seen. At the pub again I presumed. I collapsed onto the couch while Jason sat beside me on the armchair. I had the telly on, but the volume was low. I jumped at the sound of Jason's phone ringing. He stepped outside. I quickly fell asleep on the couch.
The sound of my mother screaming at the front door woke me. 12:40pm. Just like the old days... Jason followed me down the hall and helped her in. He brought her to her room and closed the door. I sighed loudly as I plummeted myself onto the couch. He sat beside me and put his hand on my knee.
"Babe, we have to talk."
This is the end. We're finished. They were the only thoughts running through my head.
"That was my dad on the phone, he proposed to his girlfriend and they've decided to stay living over there. Since he already own's the house, he thinks it stupid to sell it and wants to give it to us, that is if your willing to move."
I looked at him in disbelief.
"Stop fucking with me Jason."
"I swear I'm not, so? What do you want to do?"
"I want to move! I don't even need second thought. I want to go."
A smile spread across his face.
"Im so glad baby, I'll tell my dad now then."
He walked out of the room and into the kitchen. I walked down the hallway and into my bedroom, looking at the unmade bed from the day i left, the messy locker, the beer cans everywhere. In a weird sense I would miss this place. It was all I've ever known. I hated the noise the bed made when I sat on it, and again when I laid back. I stared at the ceiling. What would I do about my mam? I walked out took the keys off of the counter waved them at Jason to signify i was going and left. I drove to the local police station. I pulled in and walked to the door. A female police officer met me at the door.
"Hi, how are you?"
"Im good, I was just wondering on the help i could get someone ASAP to do with drink."
She handed me brochures and talked me through all the different steps.
I walked out with a hand full of brochures. I drove out the country side a little until I got to a small bungalow, nearly hidden by ivy. I knocked on the door. A woman answered it.
"Gráinne!" She exclaimed in delight."It must be years! Come in, come in!"
She made a cup of tea and sat with me, telling me about how her family has grown and her kids in college. Catherine was her name. She was my social worker when I was younger.
"Anyways, enough about me! What do you need, pet?"
"I was actually wondering if you could do me a favour."
I explained what I needed her to do. Simply get my mother to the meetings. She agreed, happily even. Since she retired she's been bored and takes any challenges that come up. I told her about me moving away.
"Gráinne that's great news! I always knew you'd go far."
We said our goodbyes. I left a sum of money in an envelope on the counter without her knowing. This way she can't return it.
I returned to the house, and told Jason what I had done. He was as pleased as I was. The hard part was telling my Mam.
