After the raid was over, Amon had forced Akira to go for medical treatment. She was of the opinion it was unnecessary but her joke about Naki rupturing her uterus must have bothered him, because he refused to leave it be.

And that was how Akira ended up in the hospital for the night, so that her doctor could make sure her wound wasn't infected. Though she was eager to go home, she wasn't foolish enough to argue with the health professionals.

Unfortunately, being alone and being unable to sleep gave her time to think—too much, in fact.

Like about the battle with Eyepatch. The ghoul that was part of the cause for her father's death had been right there, and she hadn't been able to do a thing. She hadn't dared to go against Investigator Isoyama's order when she herself was too injured to be more than dead weight.

She had been useless… just watching as Amon fought, thrown away by the kakuja and still getting up to face it—even speaking to it, though she couldn't hear his words over the sound of their battle.

And in the end, Amon had actually let that monster go when he had the perfect chance to eliminate it. It would have barely taken a few seconds and surely he despised the ghoul too. But for whatever reason, Amon had used Shinohara's injuries as an excuse.

Akira wanted to feel angry. But though she hated the choice he had made, she couldn't muster enough fury to aim at him.

Because if she had been stronger, if she hadn't gotten herself injured, she would have been able to do the task rather than wish for Amon to do it.

And that was the issue, wasn't it?

Akira Mado had always been an independent woman. She had no choice but to be. As one of the few women in the Academy and later in the CCG, bearing her family name with pride, she had to keep her head high and prove herself.

And then during the raid, she had crucially faltered. She had let that trash of a ghoul catch her off guard and bite her, and she didn't think she had ever felt more ashamed of herself than in that moment.

It was a rookie mistake. And her shame was only made worse with how Amon had rushed in to her rescue and later been so gentle about it. He hadn't even scolded her, like she had expected him to.

What he had said instead…

"I won't let you die."

Akira Mado was an independent woman. And yet, on hearing that determined and unyielding tone, her eyes had widened. He should be hating her just like she hated him, but he went ahead and did the sort of thing that left her entirely speechless.

As her eyes finally grew heavy and sleep started to claim her, Akira admitted to herself that it might not be so bad to be protected by him.

I couldn't not do this scene from Akira's perspective as well :p.
