"I don't want to go to school anymore," announced Renesmee the next time she saw her parents. Jacob, unfortunately, had tagged along. He had missed the Cullens, as much as he hated to admit it. Especially Bella - in spite of everything, they seemed to have managed to stay friends. They were hoping that their little secrets of the past would be taken to Jacob's grave - if he ever died. He had an imprint who was going to stay young for centuries.
Upon hearing Renesmee's sudden confession, the entire Cullen family and the shapeshifter were staring at her, stupefied. What had they just heard? Carlisle was praying to God that it was a prank.
It wasn't. That was what Renesmee desired. She wanted to study by herself. Besides, it wasn't like someone was going to miss her at school. She had no friends and everybody bullied her about having been born into a wealthy family.
She had made the decision with the help of Hope. Had the wolf never appeared, the hybrid would continue on living a mundane, miserable life. Now that the grey wolf played a large part in Renesmee's life, the animal had given her the strength to make life-changing decisions.
Renesmee would no longer be the meek little girl of the Cullen family. She wanted to have her own life separated from magic.
"What's that supposed to mean, Renesmee? I thought you wanted to become a music composer?", her father demanded to know. That had to be a sick joke. His only child, whom he had given everything to make sure she was always dressed in the best clothes and well-educated, now refused to complete high school. What a shame! Even her uncle Emmett had a University degree!
His daughter shook her head in disapproval. "No, Dad. That is your dream. It has never been mine," she bluntly said. "I always enjoyed our piano lessons when I was younger, don't get me wrong, but I've never dreamed of being famous. Not the way you seem to want me to be."
If Edward was a human being, his eyes would have filled with tears. He couldn't help but remember the shock and disappointment written on his deceased mother's face many decades ago when he had insisted on enlisting in the army at the tender age of seventeen. And now it was happening to him. He had never imagined any of that would have repeated.
Alice and Jasper were the most supportive of their niece. If she didn't want to go to school, so be it. At some point, she would probably decide to go back, even if it was a hundred years into the future. It was her life and her decisions. Renesmee needed to make good and bad choices to gain life experience.
"And what are you going to do? You look too young to find a well-paid job!", exclaimed Bella.
Renesmee couldn't help but chuckle, shaking her head at the same time with her arms crossed over her chest. "Really, Mother? This? You know that there's something, called the Internet? You can always find a job there nowadays."
It was Bella's turn to burst into a fit of laughter. "You think that you'll find a job just like that? Oh, Renesmee! You're still too young and naïve! You need a degree for most of these online jobs!"
The hybrid felt exhausted from arguing with her parents. Instead, she was about to turn on her heels and bail off with Hope. Day by day, it was becoming more and more clear that neither of them belonged on the Olympic Peninsula. They had to find their luck somewhere else, even if Hope never shifted back to her human form.
"Please, Renesmee, consider giving the school a second chance - it's not so bad!", her auntie Rosalie begged, stepping forward. She only wanted the best for her niece. She had never imagined if she had a nephew or a niece that they would refuse to attend school. Such a thing would have never been allowed in her household back in Rochester.
"Yeah, right!", boomed the hybrid. "It must have been easy for you - the blonde and beautiful popular girl with the best marks on her exams! Not like me, the outcast and the snob!"
The Cullen family couldn't help but let gasps out of their mouths. Renesmee had been bullied? No wonder she wanted to quit school. They understood the situation better now. Still, whatever they did, wasn't going to change the hybrid's mind. She had already made her decision.
With that, Renesmee gently patted Hope's head to urge both of them to leave. Upon exiting the house, she didn't forget to slam the door shut, leaving her father to fall down on his knees in shock, while her mother was sobbing tearlessly.
