Jacob Black was in panic mode. His imprint had left him, refusing to marry him. He had given her this ultimatum, knowing full well the laws of the reservation. No one could simply live there like that. And Renesmee, whether she was Jacob's imprint, had to marry him if she wanted to live with him, having stayed in his house for far too long, according to the elders.
"She had a choice - either to stay here and to marry you, either to leave La Push," explained the elders when Jacob came home, expecting to see his future bride waiting for him with a plate of cookies on the table. Instead, the only thing he had been served was the horrible news that Renesmee had left La Push with Hope.
"And you just let her go like that?", he was in disbelief when he heard all of it. What kind of pack and elders were they if they had done something like that?
The younger wolves were silent. None of them was brave enough to look up and face their alpha. At least he wasn't attacking them. But they all felt guilty. For what? They hadn't realised yet what a favour they had done to Renesmee and Hope. Had it not been for them, the two of them would have to plan other things. Or to be stuck in La Push forever as Renesmee bore child after child without feeling ready to.
Seth was the only one from them who dared to look Jacob in the eye and to speak. "She made her choice, Jake. There was no point in stopping her. Besides, she always seemed miserable here. At least now she will find happiness somewhere."
The words Jacob had just heard felt like a stab in his heart. No matter how hard he had tried, even after listening to Seth, his imprint had been unhappy. He couldn't help but beat himself up for causing her misery. He had to have been a better person! He had to have not forced her to move in with him! Perhaps then she would have still respected him and they could have had a chance for a more intimate relationship.
Everyone could see the tears forming in his eyes. They had never seen him cry. Not even when Bella had chosen Edward. Not even when she was dying from her dangerous pregnancy with Renesmee.
And how could not Jacob feel angry? He felt like the worst human being on Earth. He deserved to be penalised. Even being thrown in a dungeon with snakes would not be an enough punishment for him. He wished the Earth would open up and swallow him whole. Perhaps the entire world would be better off without him? It wasn't like anyone needed him. Seth could be a great alpha with his charisma. His father now lived with Rachel and Paul. His imprint was God knew where!
No one needed him. No one needed him, and the thought of that made all of it hurt like hell.
Slowly, one by one, the younger wolves dared to look up. Instead of seeing Jacob fuming, they saw the tears in his eyes. His father had them too. After all, he was seeing his youngest child being hurt that way. No one deserved to be abandoned like that. He had never expected it from Renesmee - he had always known her as a docile girl. But she wasn't one. She wasn't docile anymore. She didn't think she had ever been.
"I'm sorry, man," Quil spoke sincerely. He felt it was all he could say. He knew he would feel the same if his imprint, Claire, pulled such a stunt. Anyone who had imprinted would feel that way. And even if they hadn't, if a person they cherished ended up being miserable because of them and ran away, who wouldn't feel the way Jacob felt? Supernatural or not, every creature on Earth had feelings.
Embry rubbed Jacob's shoulder to comfort him. He had never been a talkative person. Still, he was always there when someone needed to be comforted, and everyone around him was grateful for that, especially his single mother.
The alpha couldn't help but fall on his knees on the wet from the rain grass and burst into wails, as everyone else around him could only listen to him and the sky crying at the same time. At least the ground would be soaked. And the next day was only a day away. They knew it would bring better - it had to.
