The next morning Ashton and I had to walk to school because my mother was already at work again. Luckily the walk only took about 15 minutes. „Hey, Ash?“ I asked my quietly smiling brother shortly before we arrived at school.

„Hm?“

„What are you thinking about?“

„Oh…err…nothing.“

„Yeah, sure. Ash, how long do we know each other? Six years? That must be about it. You’Re always thinking about something and by the way how you’re grinning I can tell that you’re not thinking about something but rather someone. Do you maybe want to tell me who the lucky guy is?“

„What? No, there’s nobo- Wait, how did you know…?“

„That you’re gay? Ashy, you’re my best friend and stepbrother. We’ve been living together for five years. Did you really think I wouldn’t notice that you, whenever we were at the beach or the pool, would stare at the guys and not the girls? Or your quickly reddening cheeks when hot guys were talking to you?“

„Oh..umm“

„Did you know I always wanted to have a gay best friend?“

„N-no?“

„Well, now you know it. And congrats, you’ve just won that position!“

„You’re not angry I didn’t tell you?“

„No, I’m not.“ I told him truthfully. After everything that happened back in London with his father he was being a lot more withdrawn. I was actually happy he found someone who was able to make him smile after such a short time already. „So, who is it? Someone in your grade?“

„Yeah, he is. But I’m not telling you anything else.“ Ashton declared and brought up a new topic. „Are we having lunch together again?“

„Sure!…Oh, there we are. See you later, Ash!“ I called, gave him a small kiss on the cheek and departed.

„You’re Alex, right?“ Someone asked behind me while I was waiting for Ashton in the cafeteria. Immediately I turned in the direction of the voice. The guy standing there was nervously scratching his head and waited for my reaction.

„Alive and kicking! Do we know each other?“

„Uh, no. Ashton said he would meet you here.“

„And you are…?“ I asked skeptically and eyed the boy up and down. His skin was tanned, he had brown eyes, dark hair and wore a nice smile. He was a kiwi, I could see that, even though many people would mistake him as Asian. As a born Australian I knew he was a kiwi.

„Calum Hood. Ashton and I share most of our classes and we’re friends…kind of. I mean if one can call it friendship after one and a half days.“

„You can. When I met Ashton I knew we’d be friends after two hours.“

„Oh. So you guys aren’t related? I thought Ashton said something like that.“

„Yeah, we are…just not by blood. He’s my stepbrother.“

„Oh, I see.“

An awkward silence came up as we both didn’t know what to talk about with the other one.

„Ash! We’re here!“ I shouted wen I caught a glimpse of my brother at the other end of the cafeteria. Obviously he had heard me - he was looking around frantically - but he couldn’t arrange where I had shouted from, so I began to wave my arms around frantically. Calum couldn’t hold his laughter in.
