CHAPTER 5

After two weeks in which I followed Calum through the school I got my chance. After Michael and Calum met in the hallways and talked for several minutes I followed Michael out of the school grounds while Lola followed Calum to see what he did. Michael met up with a group of guys who looked overall scary and seemed to be way to old to be students. Even though I wanted nothing more than to turn around and go back to the safe haven that the school grounds provided I decided not to let my chance slip and went up to the group. They were way to deep in conversation about someone's apparently hot body and a party to notice me approaching them. Only when I stood in front of them and cleared my throat they looked at me. Michael's face went from being happy and laughing to icecold and hatred in seconds.

But being my stubborn self I decided to ignore it and asked him politely: „Michael? Can I talk to you for a second?"

„Who are you? Michael's girl or what?" smirked one of his friends.

„No. No, she is definitely not my girl and she'll never be. And no, Alexandria, we can't talk. It's too late for talking." It hurt hearing him use my full name instead of my nickname because he knew how much I disliked my full name.

„So she was you girl!" The guy triumphed.

„No, she wasn't and she will never be my girl." Was it just delusional or did I really see a bit of regret flicker in his eyes?

„Mikey, please. Just two minutes." I pleaded and used my own special nickname for him on purpose.

„No. Just leave me be. I don't exist for you and you don't exist for me...just like it was the past five years."

„But that's not true! You were constantly on my mind! I hoped you were alright without me."

„Well, I'm perfectly fine. Great. Now leave!"

„No, Michael, I'm begging you!"

„For what? For my forgiveness? You just disappeared from my life, left me without anyone and a promise to keep in touch. Did we keep in touch? NO! I had to fight on my own while you had the perfect life with your perfect family in London without me weighing you down."

„My family is far from perfect, you ignorant asshole! It's about to break down! But that doesn't matter to you of course. You're way too cool to forgive your best friend who was forced to live in England by her mother because she wanted live with her boyfriend. I wasn't able to keep contact because, damn, I was a child! I didn't know how! I missed you so much...so freaking much but nobody cared that I didn't like England without you...nobody cared that I wanted back to Australia."

„Well, now you're here again. Congrats. Now, leave. I don't want to see you anymore. I made peace with this. You're not important to me anymore." Michael said with such a finality in his voice that I knew I had lost. Without letting him see the tears that prickled in my eyes I turned around and left. But I did not go back to school, I just couldn't. That's why I texted Ashton and Lola that I went home. Back in our house I was alone - thankfully - so I just went into my bedroom and cried for hours. I just couldn't accept that my best friend had changed so drastically. I couldn't and didn't want to believe it.

The Michael that I left five years ago had been a kind hearted, happy and outgoing person who always had a smile tugging at his lips.

The Michael I had to face now was a rebel who showed his hatred for the world - or maybe even just his hatred for me - in his appearance.

His behavior confused me to pieces so I did what I always did when I didn't know what to do. I called a friend of mine.

„Alex? Are you alright? You missed the biggest party of the year!"

„Dana, I'm in Australia."

„Oooh, right, sorry, I always forget. It's a shame you're gone. And of course you took your cute brither with you."

„Dana, Ash is..."

„What? In a relationship? No problem for me!" I knew she was smirking.

„No, that's not what I meant...he...he's gay."

„Oh...wait, what? Oh my gosh, that's so cute! Does he have a boyfriend? I need pictures of them! Oh, I'm so happy for them!" She screeched into the telephone which caused me to hold it as fas away from me as possible. I already had experienced many of these outbreaks. Dana was a very, very, very loud person but she was the best listener and she gave killer advice. Exactly what I needed right now.

„Dana, I need to talk to you."

„Sure, what's up? Can I help you?"

„I hope so...Did I ever tell you about Michael?"

„Only a thousand times." She laughed. „He was the only thing you talked about when you first got here, honey."

„Oh. WEll, he was my best friend and we were inseparable. In school he had many friends because of his warm and welcoming personality but still we stayed inseparable. When my mom and I moved to London-"

„You never told me why!"

„Well...Mom works for this big ass international law firm and they have an employee meet up once a year which lasts three days. Steven worked for them in London while my mother worked in Sydney...They always met up at these events and somehow fell in love with each other. After they held a long distance relationship for a year they decided to move in together...and mom wanted to get out of Sydney anyway so this was the perfect opportunity."

„Wow...that's so romantic!"

„Yeah...but for me it was bad. I had to leave Michael behind, what hurt me to no extent. But I was sure Michael would be able to cope without me. He has a great family, so many friends and everyone liked him! But now...he has dyed hair, tattoos, piercings and everyone at school fears him. He rarely even shows up to school and if he does he never talks or laughs. He hates me, Dana! He think I left him willingly and wouldn't care about him anymore. But that's not true! I couldn'tkeep contact with him because mom blocked his number on our telephone to get me out of the house and to get me into London. With time our contact got less and less because began to do stuff with Ashton...Dana, do you think I can get him back?"

„Do you even want that? He seems like bad news..."

„Don't talk about him like that! I know that deep inside of him he's still my best friend!"

„Okay, okay...well, maybe you could try and find out what Michael did the past five years. You said he changed drastically and you should find out why. You being gone can't be the only reason for that, something must have happened."

„Oh, that sounds clever. Thanks, Dana! I know exactly what I'll have to do!"

With that I ended our phone call and got ready for bed. Our conversation took longer than I thought.
