"Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?" - Garth Nix

Her whole body shivered in the pitch black room. People could be heard screaming for their lives in the distance. She stepped forward and gasped when her bare feet came in contact with cold water.

"Butterfly!" Someone screamed for her, breaking her away from her thoughts.

Juliet furrowed her eyebrows staring sightlessly into the darkness. "Papa?"

"Butterfly!" Her father's screams stood out. "They're killing us!"

Her heart was like a train pounding down the tracks as the screaming grew louder and louder, and she began turning around in circles. "Please stop!" Julie cried out, covering her ears with her hands. She fell on her knees and closed her tearful eyes. She couldn't take it any longer. "Papa, Mama, Lucky, and Butterfly," she murmured to herself. "Papa, Mama, Lucky, and Butterfly," she repeated the mantra one more time hoping the nightmare would stop. Hoping that once she wakes up she'll be in her house surrounded by her family.

But hope was dangerous.

The sunlight shining through the train window irritated her sight once she opened her eyes. She placed a hand over her chest trying to steady her breathing and closed her eyes. It was just a nightmare. She was more relaxed when she opened her eyes again. The brunette turned to gaze out her window and saw that the train had arrived at its destination.

Georgia.

The Georgian summer heat slapped Juliet across the face as soon as she stepped out of the train. Julie mentally groaned, Georgia was worse than New York during the summer. Sweat started dripping down her face and neck making her pull her long brown hair up with her left hand exposing her bare neck. She made her way out of the train station catching the eyes and catcalls from men in military uniforms - it made her sick to her stomach to think she would probably be spending every single day with similar ignoramus. Her younger self would've never imagined joining the military to become a combat medic. She wouldn't have even imagined a Second World War breaking out. The First World War was supposed to be the world's last war - the war to end a war.

But of course, Hitler had to destroy the lives of many people, including hers.

Her mother always told her to follow the paths of life with grace, but now that she wasn't with her anymore, Juliet wasn't so sure she could still believe in that. The paths life was making her walk through were becoming so blurred and mysterious to her.
