"Hello?" Serena said. He couldn't tell Serena that he loved her...at least not yet. He hung up. A few weeks had passed and Charles was very depressed. He spent most days locked up in his room moping in his pajamas and robe. "Charles? Please open the door." Raven said. Charles fingered his brain,he put his fingers on his forehead lazily, and opened the door. "What's wrong Charles? This isn't like you."

"What do you mean?"

"What I mean is, that you haven't been out of your room in weeks, you're always in your pajamas. You just sit here drinking all day."

"And?"

"What do you mean 'and'? What happened to the Charles I used to know? That sweet, undersanding, always full of hope Charles? The guy who always saw the good in people, mutant or not. What happened to him?"

"He's gone. What you see is what you get."

"Fine, but can I ask you one more question?"

"What?"

"Why have you given up?"

"Why? Because I don't want to put the people I love in danger, plus love sucks."

"Love sucks? Why would you think that?" Raven looked at Charles. "Is this about Serena?"

Charles looked down.

"It is! Oh, honey." Raven sat down next to Charles and hugged him. She stayed with him until he fell asleep.

Charles woke up a few hours later to the sound of a girl's voice. 'Did I do something wrong? Why hasn't he called? I thought we had something.' It was Serena again. Why was he hearing her thoughts again? Was this a sign? 'He made me so happy and he made me forget my problems. I even stopped cutting because of him. What should I do? Should I call him? I miss him so much.'

It broke Charles's heart to hear Serena think that. If only she knew. He was doing this for her own good. He was trying to think about other things, but all he could hear was the sobs of Serena.
