In the hospital room--
My eyes focused directly on Sans. The question was burning in my mind I just had to know.
"Why do you believe me?" I asked
Sans seemed just a little surprised by the question. He chuckled and leaned forward a little clasping his hands together. His eyes focused on me and he responded.
" I don't how anyone wouldn't believe you after crying like that"
I blushed in embarrassment.
"But, I have experienced this before as well" he said
"You mean , things repeat for you as well?" I asked
Sans nodded his head and I thought about it. Something didn't really make sense to me.
"You also remember when things repeat right?" I asked him
"I do, to some extent" he said
"Then, why don't you remember the times I've spent with you?" I asked him
Sans went silent. He sat up in his chair and put a hand to his chin in thought.
"I've also been wondering the same thing" he looked at me
It seemed there was another mystery besides Sans killer that we needed to solve. I gripped the edge of the bed thinking deeply on it. Of all the times I have done this loop, sans never seemed to know me. However, despite that he always seemed to know something.
"When did you start to remember?" He asked , taking me out of my thoughts.
"I-" I paused to think on it. I've don't this loop more times than I can count I cant exactly say when it started for me.
"I dont know...for me it always starts at the book shop" I thought on it more and came up with one thing.
"There is one thing though..." I hesitate to say anything else. Maybe this would provide any help to the matter.
"What is it?" Sans encouraged me to continue.
"...Before it all started, for the first time. The only thing I could think before I fell asleep was getting a second chance-- to go back and save you." My eyes looked for his thoughts. He seemed like he had something in mind.
"...did you feel deteemination?" He asked. The question itself felt a bit random to the conversation but you answered regardless.
"Determination? No...if anything I felt more sad? about the situation" I answered him although it dosen't seem to give him the answer he was probably looking for.
"Why?" You asked
"Do you know what save files are" he asked but you showed a look of confusion instead. Sans paused and decided to start over. "Do you understand the concept of souls?" He asks again.
"Yes, to a degree"
"Well, with each soul there are different properties such as kindness, perseverance, bravery, patience, integrity, justice, amd determination"
You nodded your head following along bu wondering what this had to so with anything.
"...with each trait there is a special ability, kindness can heal, patience can slow down , although now seeing those abilities manifest in humans are a bit rare." He continues " There is one soul trait that is stronger than all of them and that is determination" he said
"What can determination do?" You asked
"You can sum it up as turning back time, but more specifically it's the ability to create save points in time and go back to it, which are called resets" He explained
My eyes widened at the information.
"So then that person-"
"Has determination" sans answers
However that still didnt explain Your case. If you thought about it more you cant recall ever feeling any of those soul traits.
"But Sans, I've never accessed any files or made any save points like you've explained. If anything I dont believe I've felt any of those soul traits you've described" I sighed. I looked down at my hands then looked back at him.
"But, if the goal is to simply kill you, why would they reset?" You asked
He leans back in his chair with a tired smile "I dont know, I just figured they had a sick obsession with killing me" he half heartedly jokes.
Your stomach sinke just thinking about it. The amount of deaths you witnessed because of your inability to do anything.
"I'm sorry" you muttered
Noticing your downcast look Sans tried to reassure you. "Hey, don't worry about it I've been stuck in this loop longer than you can imagine I'm used to it by now" he offers a smile. However that did not make you feel any better.
Tears prickle your eyes and Sans can see the water works coming. He gently takes your hands in his and tries to comfront you. "Hey don't make that face, I'm fine trust me, if anything I feel alot better knowing there is someone here that I can talk to about this. It makes me feel like I'm not entirely alone ya know?" He smiled and your heart swells.
You hadn't thought about it before, that sans could of been just as alone as you were in all of this stuck knowing a death he couldnt stop was coming, forced to live it over and over again. Your heart aches for him. You clench his hands firmly your eyes focused with a new found desire.
"Although, that doesn't quite explain why you can remember though" he mutters. His hand releases yours and you find yourself missing the warmth.
You try to earnestly brainstorm with him. "Was there perhaps anything different for you?" You asked Sans hoping maybe there was something he could of you noticed.
He thinks for a moment and realization dawn's on him. "Yea, you spoke to me for the first time" he said eyeing me.
"Huh?"
He explains "throughout every reset I experienced you never bothered to talk to me, however in this one timeline -- you did" he pauses and if coming to some kind of conclusion he looks up at me.
"Um timeline?"
"With every reset a new timeline gets created which can diverge from each other." He explained " Over time these timelines have been following the same order with no change to the result however this time something did" he said
"...me" my eyes widened at his conclusion.
"Exactly, when you spoke to me a new timeline was entirely created. A timeline where you're involved, and you cr ew ated new branches of timelines from that which means--"
Knock knock
The sound of the door knocking interrupted our conversation as the nurse walked in.
"Visiting times are over now" she smiles
I cant help but let a frown show on my face. Sans smiles and gets up.
"I'll come by again so we can finish this later" he follows the nurse of and she turns off the lights.
I hudd and lay back in the bed. How was I found fo sleep after that. My mind would only be kept away with thoughts swirling around in my head. I laid on my side. I felt a little warm at the thought that I had some one standing with me now, it felt good and it made me feel a little more confident.
