"Alexandria! Get out off bed this instance. " Janis yelled at Alexandria through her bedroom door. Alex only answered with a small grunt and a groan. Janis jingled the door knob harshly and so roughly that it made Alex jump.
As Alex grabbed the corner of her cover and threw it off of her slim body, she muttered curses and threats. Alex unlocked the door and threw the door open to reveal her sister, sitting on the floor, out of breath. "What is it now?" Alex said rubbing her hand across her face as if to wipe off the exhaustion at the root.
"We got a letter from mom. Were supposed to go somewhere to met her." Janis said, pushing herself up from the floor. "Do we know its from her?" Alex asked, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion. "Yeah it's her stupid stamp. Janis said brushing off the front of her pail purple dress.
When Alex's father left her and the family, her mother decided that any letters form him wouldn't be opened. So if she was gone and she sent a letter she put a special stamp on the front. Now, why would Janis call it stupid? Probably because of the fact that the stamp was a picture of a mask. A laugh in Alex's face and in her past.
The past that she caused.
Alex's hand clenched in anger. She understood the logic in the stamp but that doesn't mean that she liked it. Or that she had to." What location and what time?" Alex said walking back into her room. Alex watched as Janis pulled out the letter and read it silently. She scoffed quietly, almost in anger. "What is it?" Alex said opening her closet door. "The Masked Cauldron."
Alex almost laughed out loud at that. Her mother always had a way of showing just how much she "cared". "What time?" Alex asked pulling out a dark purple dress. "In one hour." Janis said.
"Alright, so next question. Are we matching or not?" Alex said putting the purple dress over her night gown. Janis only smiled an said "Met me in town square in 15 minutes."
"Yes ma'am." Alex said putting her fist on her chest. "Don't yes ma'am me in your night gown soldier." Janis said trying to mimic someone with a deep voice. "I'll catch up with you later." Alex said shacking her head in disapproval.
As the door closed, Alex looked at the dress in front of her. She traced her hand down the purple sleeves and the lace in the front.
Though her father left her when she was young, Alex, Janis, and her mothers had a way of keeping their money in check. Her mother went around the small town doing laundry and backing things for the right price. Alex went and worked in a diner. and Janis went and did magic work.
Magic work was quite like metal work. Except instead of fixing and making things out of metal you did it by magic. As Alex looked at her reflection, she shuddered. She knew she had to wear that stupid mask in public. One of the things she dreaded.
15 minutes later.
"Where is that stupid stupid girl?" Alex muttered as she stood uncomfortably by the fountain. "I'm going to kill her." Alex said as she looked at the big clock behind her. People walked by some with their children others were in the middle of working. Alex turned and looked at the plaza. The
"Hey, Mask!" a voice yelled form behind her. She didn't turn to see who it was. She knew who it was. "Oh come on girl, we know your not deaf. So turn your pretty ass around and look at me."
Alex turned her head slowly to come face to face with Bee. Bee was the one thing that made wearing a mask tiring. Dealing with people who asked her why she wore the mask she could handle. Delaying with people who only looked and shrugged she definitely liked. But Bee and his crew, they were the worse. They took her in the alley of a baking store and punched her in her stomach. Once. Twine. But after the third time, Alex fell to the floor. Blood dripping from the corners of her mouth. She could fight back the only problem was that Bee was half giant. That means he was taller than her, stronger than her, and it took more time to hurt him than it would take for him to beat her.
As Bee and his 5 goons turned chuckling back to the big busy streets of the town square. Alex stood up, bushed off her dress, wiped the blood from her dress and went back to the big clock in the middle of town square.
"Alex!" a voice said from behind her. Janis stuttered as Alex grabbed the hem of her dress and stomped her way to her sister. "Where were you?" Alex whispered as people started gathering together around the big fountain. Alex watched as Janis tried to from words and failed. Severely.
"You sound like a nickering horse. We'll talk about this later. Let's go." Alex said grabbing her sister's arm.
Now you would think that they would have just got a horse and rode to the Masked Cauldron. But they couldn't. Women weren't supposed to ride horses. Only boys and men were allowed to. So how do you get to a place about 5 miles from town square if you can't ride anything. You walk.
"Gosh, I love nature walks.' Janis said looking around her at the plants and trees. Alexandria stopped, turning to her in shock. Are you serious? Alex said looking at her sister more carefully. Alex, Janis said looking at her sister sarcastically. Don't even make me start.
Alex chuckled at her sister's "humor" and turned back to the dirt road. Alex nudged her sister and pointed to the building in front of them.
"It looks terrible." Janis said. And she was indeed right. The windows were broken, the door was open and barely hanging on the hinges. "Maybe the inside isn't as bad?" Alex said shrugging her shoulder. It wasn't. Table's were turned over, pieces of glass were shattered all over the floor. The wallpaper was torn and dirty and there was bear spilled on the floor.
Janis watched as her sister walked further into the building. "Alex." She whispered. "We need to go. We shouldn't be here." Alex only waved her away when she saw something on the floor. She bent down and almost gasped. It was her mother's stamper. She didn't send the letter. Someone else had.
"Alex!" a voice yelled. Alex turned behind her to find a man holding a cloth over her sister's mouth. As Alex rose from the floor, fear running through her veins like adrenaline, a cloth was placed on her mouth. Out of desperation, she started to kick behind her, hearing grunting and cursing. The last thing she heard was her sister's screams and the man behind her telling her to calm down. After that everything went dark.
