It was the summer holiday for the students of Hogwarts' School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Draco Malfoy sat on his canopy bed in the Malfoy Manor staring at his left forearm. His arm burned where the Dark Mark had been magically branded into his skin just hours ago. He felt the smallest stab of regret. What this mark meant repulsed him. But he should be proud. Proud for joining the Dark Lord and serving such a noble cause. Draco was a Slytherin, and as a Slytherin, he was cunning and charming. He found it easy to convince people of things. This time his victim was himself. He was telling himself he was proud. The regret he was feeling was nothing but shock at the honor it was to serve the Dark Lord, especially at the mere age of sixteen. That was exactly what his Aunt Bellatrix told him, and Draco had swayed himself to believe...
He was to attend meetings, after all, he was an official Death Eater now. But Draco hated being in the presence of the Dark Lord. Such power terrified him. But he told himself that the Dark Lord's extreme powers terrified everyone, including his parents, and all other Death Eaters. Even his Aunt Bellatrix. Or maybe it wasn't the Dark Lord's powers, but how merciless he was that terrified people. If he saw reason, he would kill you on the spot without thinking twice. The Dark Lord was remorseless. But that was utter nonsense the soon-to-be 6th year told himself. Every loyal Death Eater knew he was to be afraid of the Dark Lord's power and nothing else. But that's not how Draco was seeing things. He wondered if he really was a loyal Death Eater.
"Get a grip, you coward!" Draco angrily muttered to himself right as the Dark Mark gave another uncomfortable pang. His pale grey eyes stung slightly with the tears of his frustration. He brushed them away angrily with his coat sleeve, not caring if his meticulously applied eyeliner got smudged or not.
Why couldn't he be more like his father? No wait, his father who failed to retrieve some object? What was it again? His mother had refused to tell him. What mattered was his father got caught and was now rotting in Azkaban for it. The Dark Lord is infuriated with him. He would not like to be like his father right now. The thing the Dark Lord wanted had something to do with Harry Potter. POTTER! Why did it always seem like Potter was the one to ruin his life? Because of Potter, he was left with the buffoonish Crabbe and Goyle as friends. Because of Potter, his father was in prison and was identified as a Death Eater. Because of Potter, Draco was hated by lots of people. Because of Potter, the name Malfoy was dirt to all of the wizards and witches outside of the pureblood community. The Chosen Boy Who Survived or whatever the hell they call him these days. Strutting about with his pet Weasel and Mudblood Granger. Draco wondered how things would be different if Potter had chosen to be his friend instead of pratting around with the blood traitor Weaselby in their first year. The Dark Mark gave another painful jab. Draco massaged it and wondered why he even cared about what kind of scum Potter hung out with. With no warning his Aunt Bellatrix burst into his room, laughing maniacally, while his mother followed looking defeated.
"Let me see it!" Cried Bellatrix in between giggles that sent shivers down your spine.
"Oh Bella, please don't!" said Draco's mother Narcissa Malfoy as she tentatively entered the room behind her sister. Bellatrix seized Draco's left arm and violently jerked his sleeve upward, gasping with delight as she saw the small skull with the black serpent on his arm.
"Ah yes Draco! What an honor it is, and at sixteen years old! I assume I will be seeing you tonight at the meeting?"
"The meeting!" Draco thought. The Death Eaters were going to be having a meeting tonight and he would have to attend because he was an official Death Eater now. Somehow, stupidly, he had forgotten all about it. Draco was pulled out of his thoughts when he heard his aunt's voice again, now directed at his mother.
"You must be so proud Cissy! If I had sons, I would be honored to give them up to the noble position of being a Death Eater!" Bellatrix turned to Draco. "Wear your formal robes. But not your dress robes." She left the room cackling madly. Narcissa cast one look of desperation at her son and slightly opened her mouth as if she was about to say something, but then she clenched her jaw back together, shook her head, and walked out of the room. Draco sighed and plopped himself back onto his bed, putting his head in his hands. His aunt had always unnerved him. Fifteen years of Azkaban really did things to you. For his aunt, it took away her sanity. He hoped being a Death Eater would not do the same thing to him.
