It was like a slap in the face when Aspen and Sierra left the building and a wall of cool night air flowed towards them. Extremely pleasant and only now, it was noticed how warm and stuffy, it had actually been in the room. So warm that she, in the first moment outdoors, got a chill attack and rubbed her bare arms, although it should be around twenty degrees. At least it was possible to breathe carefree again and did not possess the feeling of having to cough throughout.
"Why firebug, anyway?" asked Sierra after a while knowing, because this, not talking, was getting worse than anything else.
"Why do people call you either Nox or Nightingale?", Aspen wanted to know from her in return, which made Sierra look down to the ground with raised eyebrows, and with that, he had answered her question, "Exactly. Some things are out of our hands."
"Unfortunately," for better or worse, Sierra had to agree, because Stella and Riven had given her a name without her being able to do anything about it, "That shows once again that friends can be worse than what you like to call an enemy."
"The princess is an interesting choice," many people thought so, and not just Aspen, because Stella was never one of the school's most likeable students, and after last year's accident, nothing would ever come of it.
Laughing, Aspen stepped behind Sierra, placed his hands on her shoulders, and a moment later bent over one of them, where he held his right hand in front of her face; thumb, index and middle fingers pressed together and a soundless snap followed. A flame appeared, which, not as usual, was red, yellow, orange, but dark gray almost black.
Completely perplexed, because Sierra had never seen such a thing, let alone known that it was even possible, she took Aspen's wrist and turned him toward the light of the torches that had been hung. It was a flame, an actual one and not smoke or a trick, like an illusion. Just that, she had thought at first but as she held her palm over the flickering structure, the underside of her hand grew warm.
"Metamorphosis or transformation," Aspen forestalled Sierra as her face began to speak volumes, "It's nothing more than a breakdown into the individual components and their re-composition. A simple, visual change can be learned by anyone. However, you can ultimately do more with this one."
"So much for others being responsible for our name," Sierra replied, chuckling, now that it was clear where and why Aspen got its name, really, "In the truest sense of the word. But.... I'm impressed. This is.... More than good."
It may be that Stella's intention was a completely different one than she wanted Sierra to talk to Aspen at the party, but it had made for something, namely, that she knew what direction her future subjects would take. Transformation and Manipulation. In this case, Sierra could only say thank you sunshine, although the result of this meeting, the blonde would not like.
