"How dare you!" I screamed into my phone. Zac could be seen on the other side of the call with his hands planted firmly over his ears. He was making a ton of noise in an effort to drown me out. He could still see me though which I confirmed by flipping him off. Tom was doing his best to calm me down but I was a force that couldn't be stopped.
I had managed to wriggle the truth out of Tom on our way home and then promptly blown up when I heard the news. I immediately called Zac who had cursed at me for calling him so early in the morning. He had tried to drown out my screaming by putting his pillow over his head but that hadn't worked. "What do you want from me?" he finally screamed at me.
"Why were you hiding this from me? And why was I the last one to find out?" I cried.
"Because I wanted to tell you in person. Clearly you can't tell some people secrets. I should have known better," Zac replied.
"Honestly, you should have," Tom cut in.
If looks could kill Tom would have been dead a thousand times over. "Anyway," he continued with malice dripping from his voice, "we were going to tell you once we landed next week."
I was conflicted. I was overjoyed that my best friend had found happiness. I was also pissed that I was the last person to find out. "At least tell me how it happened," I finally offered.
"No."
I sat there in shock for a moment. "What? Why not?"
"Because it ruins the magic. I had someone record the whole thing so we have it on video. And you'll be the first one to see that video."
"Fine. I can live with that. Have you guys set a date yet?"
"Absolutely not. You can't rush greatness. Now if you don't mind I'm going to go back to bed. That is unless you want to continue screaming like a banshee."
"I'll save my screaming for when you get here."
"Oh joy."
I hung up the phone and turned towards Tom. He was looking at his phone with a frustrated expression. When he noticed that I was looking at him he quickly put his phone away and replaced his frustration with a smile. "What do you want to do for dinner?" he asked.
"Tom...," I began but he was already standing up and heading into the kitchen. As I watched him walk away I couldn't help but feel that there was a bit of distance between us that wasn't there before. What wasn't he telling me?
Tom jumped in the shower after dinner while I finished up the dishes. I smiled as I heard him singing to himself. The thought of him using the shampoo bottle as a microphone caused me to burst out in laughter. I had just put the last dish in the rack to dry when I heard a phone vibrating. I dried my hands as I walked into the living room and toward the vibrating sound. I spied Tom's phone on the couch. It was lit up with an unsaved number on the screen. Without a thought I picked up the phone and answered it.
"Hello?" I said. Nothing came through on the other end. "Hello?"
"Hey," a voice growled. It was so low and raspy it made me jump.
"C-can I help you?" I asked. I couldn't help the shaking in my voice.
They didn't speak again. Instead all I could hear was heavy breathing. At first I couldn't make out what it was but once I had identified it I hung up the phone and threw it onto the couch. My knees shook as I sank to the floor. That entire phone call made no sense. And I was scared that someone like that was calling my boyfriend.
Tom was drying his hair with a towel when he emerged from our room. He didn't see me on the floor right away. When he did finally notice me he called out my name and rushed to my side. "Baby what's wrong?" he asked. I explained the situation while he helped me onto the couch. As I continued to talk Tom's demeanor grew darker and darker. "That bastard!" he shouted when I finished.
