Chapter 6 - Food Fights and Coffee Beans

I chuckle at my dad. His hands are on his hips as he speaks, "Why are there so many brands of meat! Meat is meat! Why should one company say they taste better then the others when literally it comes from the same animal? This is so stupid." He grabs a random pack and tosses it into the cart. "Let's go." he mutters.

We walk to the cash register and carefully unload onto the conveyor belt.

"That will be $78.93. Will that be cash or card?" The perky blonde asks.

My dad hands her a $100 bill. I stare up at him wide eyed. "Dad? Where did you get that?" I poke him till he answers.

"I earned it working. Now stop poking me and grab a bag."

I roll my eyes and grab the heavy plastic bag with 'Supermart! Has all you will ever need!' printed on.

My dad grabs the other two bags. Together we begin the walk home. The entire time I see older women checking my dad out.

Mentally gagging, I continue walking. Silence covers us.

"Elaine." My dad starts. A few moments later he continues. "You start school on Monday. Okay?" He cautiously glances at me.

"Okay." I respond flatly.

"Okay? Is that all? Are you okay?" He pauses and grabs my face, squishing it in the process. He turns my face side to side and up and down.

Prying his hands away from my face, "Yes Dad. I'm really okay." I throw a reassuring smile his way.

---

"Hey!" I exclaim. Frozen with my arms extended. Slimy beans slide down my face. I glare at my Dad. I meet his gaze and smile (like one of those smiles the creepy shipping friend does).

Grabbing a handful of diced tomatoes I toss it at his face. Quickly running away to find a hiding spot.

Seeing his feet walk by I giggle. "Hmmmm. Where could Elaine be? Under the table?" My dad playfully guesses.

"How about. . .HERE!" He yanks the curtain away and chucks tomato sauce at me.

Completely drenched, I exclaim, "DAD! Wha--Dad!" He chuckles at my reaction. I blink for a moment then an evil smile breaks out on my face.

I march to the kitchen and take the two bowls of chilli we set out to cool. My dad rushing behind me sees what I'm doing and visibly pales.

"Elaine, no need to be rash. Put the bowls down."

I march over to him and dump the chilli on him. Beans slide down his stunned face. Then a look of defeat crosses his features, "Okay, okay. You win!"

I jump up and down gleefully. Twirling around. Next thing I know I'm drenched head to toe in water.

"Dad!" I exclaim.

He chuckles at my bewildered expression then whispers, "Sorry Princess. I win."

I roll my eyes, "Fine. But next time. . ." I stare at him confidently.

"We'll see."

2 days later. . .

I haven't seen my dad in a while. He's been busy with his new job.

School is approaching faster than ever. Only three more days left. I'm dreading it.

Yesterday I woke up and found a bunch of stuff in my room. My dad must've dropped it off while I was sleeping. It mainly consisted of notebooks, pencils, pens, etc.
