After a course of a few days, Mush became a regular in my life. Everyday after school I would go down to the harbor where he sold his papers, or 'papes' as the newsies called them, and I would buy his last one, then we would just walk around and talk and goof off. He had a lot of stories about the other newsies, and he promised he would introduce them to me someday. I would listen and laugh at his stories, I didn't have very many interesting stories anyways. I was kind of an outcast, I always had my nose in a book and people just thought I was awkward all together.
Mush had told me one day that all of the newsies had nicknames based off of their personalities. Even though i wanted to know where he got his nickname, I didn't. Well, I was being really tempted into asking him though. I was interrupted from my thoughts by Mush.
"Hello? Ellie!?" Mush laughed. I giggled. I loved his laugh.
"Sorry, I was just thinking," I said. Mush raised an eyebrow.
"What about?" He pressed on.
I sighed. "Why do they call you Mush?"
*Mush's POV*
Fantastic. Great. Amazing.
I was hoping she would neva' ask why they call me Mush. How do I tell her that they call me Mush because because I'm a little lover-boy? A flirt. The guy that's known around Central Park for the number of goils he's brought to the same bench to kiss. How in da woild do I tell her that?
"It's 'cause I'm a bit of a romantic," I said. She smiled at me. "What are you smiling'at?" Iasked. She began to laugh.
"I like it," She said through a fit of giggles. When she calmed down, she looked up at the big clock that could be seen from the top of the Pulitzer Building. "Oh shoot, I gotta go home!" She said.
"Do ya want me ta walk ya home?" I asked her. I was kinda hoping she would say yes.
"Aw, Mush. I wish you could. But my dad invited Oscar over for dinner and he wants me to 'look my best,' I don't want you getting caught by him or anything," she said, disgust and annoyance evident in her voice. She pulled me in for a quick hug and I didn't hesitate to hug back. She pulled away and turned to the direction of her house.
She quickly looked back at me and waved before turning again and walking away.
