"Absolutely NOT!" his mother practically shouted in the kitchen.

He shouldn't be surprised, yet somehow it was still somewhat a shock. He smiles awkwardly as the rest of his family stared for a long five seconds. Which, if he had to be honest, felt like hours. Sensing his mate's sudden distress, his father managed to get everyone to continue on with the party and brought the two of further in the kitchen.

"What's going on here?" he asked sternly and Theo gestures to his mother.

"Mom won't let me go to the annual mating ceremony," he answers with a slight growl, and his father narrows his eyes at Theo.

"Watch your tone when talking to me," he warns him, making Theo bow his head slightly in submission.

"Sorry dad," he apologized. "But the fact still remains that I want to go."

"You are not going anywhere, end of discussion," she argues, fuming while Theo frowned.

"But mom-" he tries to argue, but his father raised a hand to stop him, before facing his mate.

"First things first," he replied. "We are going to talk," he mentioned, and his mate turns to face him with a disapproving look, but before she opened her mouth to argue, he adds, "Like civilized people."

She glares at him and he stares her down, both their eyes glowing bright scarlet. This a rare sight. But when they stare each other down like this, it's a silent battle between mates and alphas. "Which one will yield first?" Theo wonders.

With a sigh, his mother yields and her scarlet eyes reverted back into human eyes. Her mate puffs out his chest, making Theo roll his eyes.

"Now that that's settled," he turns back towards his son. "You said you wanted to go participate. Which I don't think it's the best idea," he replied making Theo throw his arms up exasperated.

"Unbelievable," he mutters. "Seriously dad? Are you seriously taking her side in this?" he asked. Although he shouldn't be surprised that he would side with his mate. Other than that, he can probably think of a million reason as to way he isn't letting him go.

"I'm not taking anyone's side...yet. I merely stated that this wasn't a good idea," he replied. A pause came which gave Theo a little hope. Hoping that his father would let him go and deal with his mother for him.

"But...?," he asked, urging his father to continue his sentence and his father sighs.

"But I'm not going to stop you either," he says which made Theo howled in excitement. "Only..." his father continues which immediately seized his excitement. "Only if you can proof to me that you can shift."

Theo stared at his father worriedly. He knows that he hasn't been in sync with his wolf ever since the incident. And his father clearly knows this too. He wants to test him.

"You want me to shift?" he asked nervously, and his father held his gaze sternly.

"Did I stutter?" he asked before grasping Theo's shoulder. "Let's talk outside for a moment," he gestures to the door before glancing at his mate. "We'll be back. Trust me, we're just going to have a little chat," he reassures his mate who gave him a stiff nod.

As they walked outside, his father didn't say a word. Theo worried that he might be mad or something. Or that he wasn't going to let him go. Looking down on his watch right now, it's almost an hour before the ceremony starts. He only grew more and more anxious as the silent walking went on. Before long they stopped at a large oak tree filled with claw marks.

"Do you remember this tree?" his father finally asked, and Theo stood beside him as both stared at the tree, growing high above.

"Yeah, I do." How can he not? This is a very traditional family tree. They're family has always been the sentimental type no matter how stone cold they can appear to be. The claw marks was small, indicating signs that it was clearly caused by pups.
