You felt like you couldn't breathe. All you could feel was yourself panicking, as you tried desperately to claw out of the strange film material that had engulfed you. Digging your nails into it as hard as you could, you managed to create a hole for you to climb out of. You fell out of the film and straight into the hard ground, shaking and in pain.
Suddenly you were out of your own body. You could see yourself distantly, but it was unclear of where you were or what you were doing. You looked much younger, maybe around nine or ten, and you were placing flowers at a grave. At your mother's grave.
It changed again. Lights were blinding you and you crashed around trying to shield yourself from the sheer intensity of it. A giant man loomed over you, disappointment and hatred evident in his eyes. He seemed barely able to look at you, his hands trembling slightly in an effort to control his rage.
"Please! Dad, I'm sorry-I didn't mean to, I didn't want-" you watched yourself crawl away from him, terrified.
You heard a loud slap as you watched this version of yourself fall to the floor crying as your father continued to tower over you, now grabbing you by your hair to face him, screaming at you, screaming of how much he hated you and wished you had never been born, how he wished he hadn't been left with you when your mother passed away, how he wished you could have taken her place so that she could still be here today.
Another voice filled your mind as you tried to get away from the increasingly violent scene that was unfolding in front of your eyes, a scene that was all too familiar to you. The voice grew clearer and clearer until it drowned out the incessant screeching of your father.
"Excuse me? Um...." there was a pause, the voice seemed unsure of what to say next. "Hey, wake up. Come on, everything's ok."
You sat up hastily, shaking slightly as you tried to remind yourself that what you had just seen, was in fact, just a dream. And while it had been how you had spent countless days of your childhood; you were lucky enough to be away from that right now.
You looked at the girl who had been leaning over your bed, poking you. She had realized you were now awake and shifted away from you, giving you a little space to cool off.
"I'm Ryujin, your roommate." she looked uncertainly at you but offered you a small smile. "I arrived a little later than everyone else since my flight was from Korea, but during the night I heard you screaming and felt bad, so I tried to wake you up. I hope you weren't too startled."
You gave a small laugh. "Yeah, don't worry about it....I'm sorry we had to meet like this though, I promise I'm not like this all the time."
She returned your laugh with a soft chuckle. She had a pretty smile. You blinked and looked at the clock and groaned. "We are very late."
The next 20 minutes involved the two of you scrambling around trying to get ready in time, putting your uniforms on (which you thought were kind of bland but decided you could live with), brushing your teeth and hair, putting on your makeup and gathering your stuff for the day. The two of you had to skip breakfast because of how late you were and decided to go to the hall together for moral support, since Ryujin was somewhat nervous at arriving later than everyone else.
You were surprised at how quiet the hall was in comparison to the day before. You gave your names to another teacher and joined the end of one of the lines of students trying not to put too much attention on you and Ryujin, even though you arrived much later than everyone else.
The deputy head teacher finished her speech, but you didn't really listen. Something about behaviour and expecting the best, you had heard it countless times before, and it was never anything of actual importance anyways.
