My second day of school was already finished, and now I can go home. Once I had everything ready, I bolted out the doors to the school. For one, so I could catch the train on time, and two, so I wouldn't have the misfortune to have Harry drive me home again. That was humiliating. Although a part of me was thinking he wasn't going to try to talk to me and purposely make me miss the train again. After what happened at lunch today, I felt like a big ton of weight was lifted off my shoulders.
The train ride was crammed together by adults and kids, either checking their phones or reading a newspaper. I had to pay attention to when I was going to get off, so I couldn't do anything to pass the time. Three stops later, it was my turn to get off. I put in directions to get to my apartment, but not before shooting my mom a quick text about getting off the train and that I was going to be home a little late. A few seconds went by and she replied with an okay. Mom wasn't a person to worry as much, knowing that if I got lost she would tell me to stay calm and that she would pick me up.
After that, I went to find my way back home like a modern version of Hansel and Gretel. With every twist and turn, I wasn't sure where I was going. The coordinates were somewhat off, but I didn't panic. Maybe I was in a crappy part of town that didn't have good reception. It would've been a smart idea to take a cab, but I didn't have money to pay the driver. This was one of those moments where I wished I had a car of my own.
To make it worse, my phone suddenly began to glitch. It never had any problems ever, so that's why I was confused. Sighing to myself, I was going to have to rely on a paper map like the good old fashioned way. However, the area I was in was unfamiliar. People hustled on and about, too busy to know that I was lost. I didn't see any map stands anywhere, so I had nothing. Nothing except my bugged out phone.
"Shit," I said to myself.
Not wanting to stop anyone to ask for directions, I decided to figure this out on my own and cut through an alleyway, hoping it would lead me to a better area in the neighborhood. I squeezed my arms tightly together, keeping my eyes open for something. I was hoping this would save me time, and that I could get some service somewhere. Nothing bad would happen to me, right?
While I was walking through the alley, I suddenly got a bad feeling in my gut. I was in a sketchy part of the city, yes, but I brushed it off, thinking I was being paranoid. I, however, was dead wrong when my eyes landed on two men, sitting beside a rusty blue dumpster, smoking. My footsteps became quieter, watching as they passed the cigarette back and forth to each other. They heard me approaching, so they stopped to glance up at whoever was passing by.
I didn't make eye contact with them as I reluctantly passed them, getting creeped out as I felt their gaze following me the whole time. I kept my head low, thinking if I stayed out of their way they wouldn't bother me. My heart suddenly began to pound as I heard them shifting to stand up to their feet. They were following me, I just knew it. What have I gotten myself into? It felt like it was going to take forever to get out of the alley and onto a safe road, so I had to brace myself. Now I wish I missed the train so Harry could drive me home like last time, because I ran into something dangerous at the wrong place, at the wrong time.
