To Lillian's utter surprise she had received a box full of pins for school, with a letter. It informed her and her guardian that the pins were to be used according to the year she was in and that if she was to be taken out of the school she could keep the ones she actually used but had to return the others.

Smiling she bounced up the stairs to Dudley's room and excitedly showed him the pins. Each one was silver with a different symbol on it according to year painted in navy blue. Dudley urged her to try on the whole uniform, and she skipped off to change.

She went downstairs and twirled around for her mother and Dudley. Her brother laughed at her bubbling excitement and Petunia snapped a quick photograph. The three laughed, joked and played around until it was almost time for Vernon to come home.

Lillian had glanced at the clock in the lounge and had shot up from her sitting position. Petunia and Dudley jumped at the sudden change in her, and she nervously laughed. "Uncle Vernon is going to get back in a bit, I'm going to go change for dinner real quick."

She rushed up the stairs as Dudley stared after her, knowing something was wrong. Petunia herself felt and saw the shift in attitude when Vernon was mentioned and worried. Neither wanted to think he had hurt her in some way, but the option was there.

Getting dinner ready, Petunia thought over the past few years of Lillian's attitude towards Vernon. Slowly realizing that maybe Vernon had been hurting her without Lillian herself saying anything. She frowned in thought as she continued with making dinner.

Lillian had come downstairs again in a plain gray knee-length skirt and dark blue shirt with little stars on it. She and Dudley helped with the rest of dinner, all three tense about Vernon for different, though similar enough, reasons.

The following week had been filled with anticipation and slight stress for Lillian. She was forever excited about going to school, but she was starting to realize she would have to figure out how to make friends on her own.

Dudley's friends had been her friends so she never really needed to try and find any of her own. They were all older than her by a year or two, but she seemed to fit right in with them.

If she needed help they helped her, in return she would help them with things too. They fight off bullies when Dudley isn't around and taught her self-defense. In exchange, she helped them with homework, playing pranks, and getting back at anyone who deserved it.

She was a little disappointed that she couldn't find any girls to be friends with, they all thought she was a ruffian. It was rude of them really, she did all sorts of 'girly' things. She loved dancing, ballet, singing, painting and lots of other things.

Just because she hung about the lads didn't mean she was suddenly a wild card. Swimming in the lake, play fighting, hunting, pranking, boxing and other things weren't inherently boy only zones.

Lillian liked to think she was the perfect median between 'boy' and 'girl' things. She liked wearing dresses and skirts, they were comfy. It wasn't her fault if trousers were more suitable for running around the neighborhood.

Though it was funny, seeing the boys shocked at her more feminine school uniform kind of hurt. Dudley seemed to have noticed, and he berated his friends for being rude. The three lads seemed sorry and apologized, adding in that she looked great.

Lillian smiled happily and thanked them. Maybe she could make her own friends, better friends, that wouldn't hold her down with the expectations they or anyone else had. She would make an effort but if it didn't work then she was just going to have to deal with it.
