The Surface Above

The surface was not a friendly place as many would say with ruins of civilization, gifts from the past coming in the forms of radiated dead zones, and fallout storms, and about everything else that wanted to kill you. These many forms of death were plenty amongst surface but the deadliest of them all coming in the form of the giant monsters called kaiju, these kaiju were rare in sighting but if you did find one, the only advice that would be given would be to run and hide, Our merry band of friends had yet to run into many of the deadly things of this godforsaken wasteland, with the most dangerous things that they have encountered being a severe fallout storm and nuclear dead zones left behind by the bombs from a war long past. With all of these things in mind, the smells that permeated the wasteland were not one of great regard and were currently the topic of discussion amongst our motley crew.

"Why the hell does the Ripps not filter out the smells like hell it's disgusting out here!" exclaimed James as he and his friends were walking through a half-destroyed hospital

"Remember the Ripps were made with function in mind and not form but I really do see your point, the smell of death is pungent here" Michael chimed in as he kicked a rotting skull on the ground

Josephine looked at the melting corpse leaning on the hallway wall and quickly spoke up "This whole place smells like death itself, I'm going to vomit if we have to stay any longer than we have to"

Joseph clutching his stomach walked through the destroyed hallway littered with the dead, he gagged and managed to speak up "Can we get of out this place already, this place is making me sick"

"This place used to be a hospital so what's with all the corpses everywhere man, like... OH GOOOD" James said before stepping on the remains of a rotten corpse

After a few minutes of walking down the destroyed hospital, Michael saw an opening in the side of the hallway to the surface and quickly announced his finding to the rest of the crew "Hey guys, I think this is enough scavenging for today, I found an exit down here!"

"Finally, we can go rest for the day" James huffed in relief

Joseph quickly chimed in "I don't think I can stay in here for another moment, the number of skeletons in this place just gives me the creeps"

The group quickly walked out of the hole that was in the side of the hallway and examined their surroundings. The surrounding area looked to be near the parking lot of the hospital, ruined and crashed cars seemed to litter the ground with the surrounding buildings seemingly collapsed. The area was in a small suburb-like area with small shops just across the destroyed road with destroyed windows showing insides long ago left behind. The lot and its surroundings seemed to give an eerie feeling of loneliness.

"This place seems to have seen better days," remarked James as he examined their surroundings

Michael seemed a bit off at the lonely atmosphere of the area, spoke up "The area seems safe but the silence of the surface just never gives me any good feelings"

"Well, it has been years since human civilization on the surface was active and vibrant" Joseph responded after Michael's remark

Josephine tired of lazing about broke the boy's stupor and announced "C'mon guys, we have to get a move on to an area we can sleep in before night falls"

"I think I saw clean enough storefront just across the road," said Joseph as he pointed to the location mentioned

James responded to Joseph's recommendation "Looks good for the night, might as well work for now"

And so the group moved, and walked through the destroyed parking lot, The ruined and decrepit cars seemingly making the walk through the lot, a lot more complex than it should be. They eventually got through the mazelike lot and reached the exit and were met with the road that stood between them and the storefront. Before they took a step onto the road itself, something out of the ordinary was noticed by Michael.
