Established Relationship
Third P.O.V
Recently it felt like their entire house had been engulfed in coldness. The kind of cold you feel in the middle of January, sweeping through your entire body, freezing you, from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.
It had been six months since Derek had walked in on his husband, Spencer, cheating on him; six months since Derek swore he could forgive his partner and they could move past this.
Spencer hasn't felt anything but cold since that day.
For the first week after Derek had caught him, Derek didn't speak a word to Spencer. Spencer had tried, tried apologizing, tried pleading with Derek, tried everything he could to get him to talk, but Derek hadn't said a word. Their house was filled with such a cold silence that, despite it being the middle of summer, Spencer wrapped himself in blankets to try to keep some warmth inside.
And then came the anger, but it wasn't yelling, wasn't accusatory, just cold anger filled words said in a manner that that sent chills down to the very center of Spencers soul. Despite the anger, Derek promised that they could work past this and Spencer felt a glowing spark of warmth begin inside him. But, the anger returned and the spark was put out.
Derek left for a while, and while he promised to come home eventually, Spencer feared that this was the end of them. Alone, completely alone, sleeping alone, eating alone just being alone was something Spencer had not experienced in their 7 years together and now he couldn't seem to remember a time when he wasn't alone. Their house had never felt so empty and Spencer curled in on himself, feeling nothing but a numb chill that seemed impossible to go away.
In a week Derek returned, yet the coldness stayed.
Things didn't get better in the weeks that followed. Coldness seemed to seep inside from under the door, in through the cracks of the windows. No matter how warm Spencer turned the thermostat the coldness won over.
Spencer tried, full of guilt but determined to make them work, but despite his efforts there didn't seem to be anything but snow left inside a once sunny relationship.
After a couple weeks of eating leftovers or frozen meals in separate parts of the house, Spencer decided to cook them dinner to eat together. He made it while Derek was out and when Derek returned the table was set with steak, wine and candles. Derek sat across from him and Spencer was relieved he had sat down at all. Dinner seemed to be going alright until Spencer tried to reach out and touch Dereks hand. Derek shook him off and stormed away. The candles burned out.
Nights were by far the hardest. They laid together in bed every night, never touching, not have even kissed in the last three months. Spencer longed for the days in which Derek would keep him warm in his arms, missed the heat spreading between them, but lately Spencer just shivered.
One night Spencer tried, reached out for Derek in the night. When his armed was pushed back towards him, Spencer had had enough. He pleaded with Derek to touch him, to hold him, even just to fuck him. "You're pathetic" Derek snarled and left their bedroom to sleep on the couch. Coldness seeped into Spencers body as he lay there, alone again, leaving a chill that his many blankets couldn't cure.
The next morning Derek apologized. That was it no explanation, no conversation, they were supposed to be healing, but the coldness still remained between them. "You said you could forgive me" Spencer said, his voice broken. Derek reached for him, to touch him, and then pulled away, leaving the room. Spencer could have sworn a breeze of frigid air swept past him.
Spencer thought that this was the worst, the relationship couldn't get any more far off than this, but then of course, winter came. Derek started coming home late, smelling like bars, cheap perfume, and sex. Spencer realized Derek had stopped wearing his wedding ring, when he found it laying on the counter near the sink. He didn't move it, in hopes Derek had just forgot it, but when it continued laying their Spencer realized the truth, Derek just didn't care. That realization hit him like a blizzard and he was blinded, lost, and most of all a freezing kind of cold that had just become and everyday feeling at this point.
He decided to approach Derek about the ring, deciding it couldn't hurt to ask. "This ring" Derek responded in a snarl "you're asking why I don't wear my ring? because you clearly don't care about what this ring means". Derek ripped the ring out of Spencers shaking hand and threw it across their living room. Spencer heard it hit the floor with a heartbreaking clatter. And then it was somehow even colder in the house.
And then the sixth month anniversary came of Spencer being caught cheating. Spencer hadn't heard from Derek all day, but it's not like that was unusual now anyways. When he got home from work, his world fell around him. All of his husband's stuff was gone, and all that was left was a note on the table with his wedding ring laying on it.
The note read " Spence, I thought I could forgive you and move past this. But since that day I walked in on you cheating, this house has not felt the same. There is a kind of cold that lingers here now, no matter what I do I couldn't escape it. So I am leaving to find warmth, because I deserve for it to be summer again. I will send the divorce papers" -Derek.
Spencer dropped the note on the ground and sunk down to his knees. He couldn't say he hadn't expected this but still Derek was his love and he didn't know how he had messed up so badly. He managed to stand make it to his bed where he collapsed. He was alone now and going to be alone forever, and the only thing that he could feel?
Cold
This is a happy ending for people who can't deal with things ending sadly
One year, that's how long it had been since Spencer had found that note on the table. One year of terrible cold, winter chills, and frosty mornings he couldn't escape. And then on this day, exactly one year since Derek left him, he heard a knock on the door. He had barely spoken to anyone this last year, cutting off most of his friends, so he couldn't imagine who it could be.
But, he opened the door and stopped dead in his tracks. Derek was standing there, an unreadable expression on his face. "Spence..." Derek started voice catching and then stopped talking. Spencer was frozen unsure what Derek would do. Derek stepped forward and to Spencer's surprise, pulled him tight to his chest, arms wrapped around him. The best hug of Spencer's life. For the first time in over a year Spencer finally felt it....
Warmth
AN: Was that enough use of a cold analogy for you lmao
I have had that idea in my head for way too long, but now that I wrote it I'm not sure that I like it, but oh well. I also didn't mean to make Derek sound like the bad guy but that's kind of how it ended up. Let me know what you thought :)
