Established Relationship

Holding Hands with his partner (especially in public) was not something Derek Morgan tended to do. To him it was immature like something high-schoolers do, and not that he was insecure in his masculinity, holding hands was not very "manly" in his opinion. Not that he had a problem with any other type of physical touch and was constantly touching his boyfriend, Spencer, with a hand on his back, arm around his waist or fingers running through that soft mess of hair on top of Spencer's head. And somehow to Derek, though he would never admit it holding hands, as juvenile as it was, held a type of intimacy and security beyond any other type of touch.

These are 4 times Derek needed that intimacy and security.

1. Tobias Hankel (possible T.W.)
The relief that flooded Derek's body when they found Spencer alive in that cemetery was a intense feeling like he had never felt before. After watching the beating Spencer had taken and the life being knocked out of him for the last 48 hours on that tiny computer screen, Derek wasn't sure he would ever see his boyfriend alive again. When the team found Spencer alive and Tobias Hankel dead, Derek was determined not to let Spencer out of his sight ever again. When they got Spencer onto the ambulance, Derek had insisted on riding with him to the hospital. Laying in the middle of the ambulance, on the stretcher, being surrounded and worked on by EMT's trying to keep him alive, Derek couldn't reach any of Spencers body but his hand. So Derek took Spencers hand into his own and interlocked their fingers as tightly as he could without hurting Spencer. And he was determined not to let go the entire ride and kept their fingers interlocked once they arrived at the hospital, running alongside the stretcher until a nurse stopped him making him let go as they rushed Spencer into surgery. And when Spencer was done in surgery, everything having gone okay and now he was asleep on a hospital bed, Derek pulled a chair up next to the bed and grabbed Spencer's hand again, lacing their fingers together, rubbing small circles on the back of Spencers hand with his thumb. He kept their hands like that until Spencer woke up at which point he thought it would be better to crawl in to the hospital bed with Spencer holding him tightly to his chest.

2. Carl Buford (possible T.W.)
The second time Derek had to face Carl Buford on a case was after Buford was already in jail. The team had been in Chicago working on a series of murders. When Derek had seen the words "look up to the sky" written by the crime scene he instantly knew who was involved. A sick feeling of dread overcame him as he had to explain to the team what he had found out. When he had suggested going to the prison to talk to Buford, Hotch and Spencer had instantly turned down the idea, expressing to him that there was no need for Derek to put himself through that. But as the case progressed and they still couldn't find who was responsible, the whole team knew it was time to visit Buford. Hotch and Spencer had both offered to talk to Buford in place of Derek, but without Derek, Buford wasn't going to admit what they needed him to. So Derek, Hotch, and Spencer (who had insisted on coming even after Derek told him not to) headed up to the prison to try and get some names of who all Buford had assaulted when they were in his care. Derek was tense and on edge the entire way to the prison, but kept it bottled up leading to irritability with Spencer the entire ride there. Spencer didn't hold him to this behavior though, because he knew what Derek was about to face would be the hardest thing he had ever done. When they arrived Derek insisted on going in to talk to Buford alone while Hotch and Spencer waited outside the room, watching  to observe Buford's behavior.

A few moments later Derek came out and handed Hotch a list of names and mumbled something about having to use the restroom. Knowing Derek better then he knew himself, Spencer was  wise enough to following his boyfriend into the bathroom. Derek grabbed on the bathroom sink to try and steady himself when a wave of nausea ran through him. He vomited in the sink and stayed hunched above waiting to make sure it didn't happen again. After a minute or so he splashed water on his face and straightened up how he was standing. Spencer knew better then to touch him at that moment, when all those thoughts of what happened to him as a child were in his head. Derek, who couldn't currently stand the thought of being hugged or even have his back rubbed right now, needed some form of contact from his boyfriend. Derek turned towards Spencer and stretched out his hand grabbing Spencers and interlocking there fingers. He squeezed tightly for his own reassurance, as if he wasn't holding on tight enough, Spencer would leave. Derek remained holding on to Spencers hand out of the prison, all the way back to the downtown Chicago police station.
