IF SHE WAS TRUTHFULLY SPEAKING, Orion couldn't stop thinking about every cruel thing Scott said, though she wasn't as angry as before. Her stomach no longer bubbled with fury, and her eyes had dried, yet she still felt something unpleasant.

She felt a terrible combination of despair and remorse, she supposed. Orion regretted yelling at Scott even if he had deserved it. She knew his cruel comments were because of the full moon and not a reflection of who he was, but that didn't mean they didn't hurt. Orion wondered if he ever wanted her to be part of this or if he had been putting up with her for the past few months. She'd never felt out of place or unwanted, but it was no secret she was the odd one out, not being best friends since childhood.

Did he really believe she didn't care about him? Was her emptiness really obvious?

Orion always assumed that her loneliness was hidden. A secret that only she knew. It was foolish, now that she thought about it. Of course, the girl with a dead mom is desperate and lonely. It was hard not to be when you spent your entire life avoiding conversations about feelings and repressed everything until you were in this dark space that was impossible to climb out of.

Orion didn't know any better. She couldn't see how anything else was possible. How else was she supposed to be something else? How can you be delighted with your existence when something as sacred as a mother has been ripped away from you?

She knew with Stiles and Scott, it felt different. Helping them navigate the complex and terrifying world of werewolves gave her a purpose. Something else to do besides wallow in her nothingness. Not that it mattered anymore.

Orion sat on the steps in front of the school, pulling her knees closer to her chest as she watched the birds fly from tree to tree. There wasn't much else for her to do. Orion did not want to watch the lacrosse team practice drills as Coach Finstock belittled them for running slower than his dead grandmother. Their misery wasn't going to lessen hers.
