O L I V I A
"Wait! I can't move that fast, Anna!"
"You really don't have a choice!" She whispers back to me harshly. "I've already alerted the team, but we need to get out of here."
I try to stay close on her heels and feel my heart pounding in my chest. I wasn't sure if it was from the adrenaline of everything going on or the alcohol settling in.
Anna had told me to leave all of our stuff behind and had told me we weren't staying at the hotel. I had no idea where we were going next but my hopes of staying in New York were fading fast.
The two of us edged near the end of the hallway and she extended her arm out to keep me from walking past her. I held my breath as she peaked around the corner and caught sight of her hand moving towards a tiny hand gun hiding under her shirt.
"Fuck!" She curses.
"What's wrong?"She continues to stare ahead. "They are in here."
"Do you recognize them at all?"
"No," She laughs coldly. "They have masks on and are holding the staff hostage. Fuck!"
My stomach turns and I feel a sharp chilling sensation electrify my body. "What are we going to do?"
She moves back towards the hallway and squats down next to me. The goofy and drunk Anna from before has now entirely changed to the bad bitch she is.
"Do you trust me?" She asks.
I glare at her. "What do you mean?"
"Are you scared of heights?"
"Anna!"
She gives me no time to answer and grabs me by the arm. The two of us head towards an emergency exit at the end of the hallway and she gives it one swift kick before the chain gives away there.
"Go!"
I hurry through the open door and run up the stairs as quick as I can. I hear the terrifying shrieks of guests not too far from us now as a round of gunshots ring out.
"Oh god!" I cry out in horror and grab at the railing.
"Olivia," Anna says from behind. Her voice softening a bit, "We have to keep going."
"What if this is my fault again?"
She looks at me and grabs my hand comfortingly. "It's not your fault, Olivia. I promise you."
We stare at each other for a moment in silence before another deafening sound of gunfire echoes from below. It almost sounds as if it is coming closer."Move!" Anna commands.
We continue up the flight of stairs as fast as we possibly can manage. I honestly wish I would've been more active because when we reached the roof door I could feel my thighs turning to jelly.
I push against it breathlessly and it doesn't budge, "It's locked!"
Anna pushes me aside and pulls her gun out. I step back quickly as she aims for the metal lock on the door and pulls the trigger.
"Let's go!"
The door swings open violently with the wind as we run out onto the dark rooftop. I shiver as the breeze rushes over my bare arms and look around.
"What do we do?" I ask her.
She pulls her phone out briefly to read something on the screen before walking towards the edge of the building. I follow behind and carefully lean my body over to look down.
My stomach immediately spirals from the distance between the top of the building and the ground. Twelve floors is a terrifying height and I suddenly realized why she had asked me earlier if I was scared of heights in the first place.
"No fucking way!" I shake my head quickly.
She looks at me with annoyance, "I don't expect you to jump, Spiderman."
I roll my eyes at her and look around the flat top of the building again. "Someone bringing a helicopter?" I ask jokingly.
She shakes her head and places her gun back in her waistband, "Follow me."
She leads the both of us towards the opposite end of the roof facing the back of the hotel where she had parked the Porsche. In the dark I can just barely make out the yellow shape of it at the edge of the lot.
"Here!" She says loudly and knocks her hand on a metal pole. "It's sturdy, I promise. We just need to climb down."
I watch as she grips the edges of the ladder and starts to descend slowly. The entire time I keep picturing her letting go or just something horrific happening at any moment.
"Olivia!" She yells up at me. I look down at her with panic clear on my face. "Get out of your damn head and get moving."
"O-ok." I say in a small voice.
I try to follow her lead and step onto the first rung of the ladder with confidence. I can already feel my legs trembling as I take the first step down.
"Come on, Olivia!" Anna yells from below.
I look down between my feet to see she is already a few feet away from the ground. How the hell does she move so quickly?!
"I'm coming!" I bark back and take a deep breath.
I continue to step down again and feel the next rung just beneath the edge of my shoe. I try to balance my weight there but my foot slides off and my grip loosens.
"Fuck!" I gasp out and catch myself quickly.
"What the fuck are you doing!?" Anna yells.
I squeeze my eyes tight and take a deep breath, "I'm fine! Coming."
I start to descend again and take each step slow and steady. My entire body is shaking from the cold winds and I can feel tears stinging the corner of my eyes.
"Almost there, Olivia!" Anna calls up to me.
I nod a little to myself and continue to drop myself down the ladder until I feel something rattle it from above me.
"Hey!"
I look up and see a couple of dark figures looking down towards me. I can't make out their faces and one of them has a gun resting at their hip.
"Stop!" A male voice shouts at me.
I feel myself start to shake when I realize they are coming down the ladder after us and without thinking I let go of the ladder completely.
"Ahh!"
My body falls through the air for a moment before I feel something wrap around me and pull me down onto the ground with a massive thud.
"Fuck! That hurt!" Anna groans out and releases me.
I pull myself up and grab her hand, "I'm so sorry! I didn-"
She grimaces and puts her hand up. Her stare focused on the men climbing down quickly now.
"Let's move."
She grabs me by the arm and steers me right for the Porsche. I follow her lead and hop into the passenger side as quick as I can with the panic raging through my body.
Anna turns the car on and peels out from the parking lot leaving whoever those men were far behind us.
"We did it!" I beam at her.
She doesn't look at me and keeps her eyes locked on the road, "They are already on us."
I look over my shoulder and realize she's right. A pair of headlights shine brightly behind as they swerve around other cars to catch up with us.
"Who the fuck is this?"
She shakes her head and cuts for an exit, "I'm not sure. I don't recognize the voices."
"Do you really think they are after me?"
She glances over at me and I catch a brief look of worry evident on her face. "I don't know, Olivia."
My stomach turns and I look down at my shaking hands. I felt so powerless and like I was losing a grip on reality all together.
I had to do something.
"What can I do, Anna?" I beg her.
She looks at me briefly and nods at the cellphone laying by my feet, "You can call your fiancé."
My stomach flips with the thought of having to tell Alessio about the shit I'm in again. I knew he was going to fly me back no matter what now.
"Hello? Anna?"
"No...it's me."
"Olivia?" Alessio says and I already pick up worry in his voice. "What is going on? Why are you calling me from Anna's phone?"
"Alessio someone is chasing us." I tell him and look back in the rearview mirror. The SUV from before is only one car behind us.
"Where are you?"
I look at Anna confused and she takes the phone from me, "I'm taking highway 64 over by that club called Radiance. I sent out an alert to the team but I don't know who these men are, Alessio. They had the entire hotel held hostage...I don't understand who the fuck these people are!"
I watch her face carefully as she continues to listen to whatever Alessio is saying and maneuvers around several cars in front of us causing them to honk wildly as she cuts them off.
"Got it."
She flips the phone shut and tosses it to me. "Keep it on you. Our team is about 10 minutes from here."
"Where are we go-" I ask but stop as a force suddenly knocks us from behind.
"Fuck!" Anna shouts.
I feel my head hit the window and blindly try to focus my vision again on the car behind us. They were purposely trying to run us off the road now.
"Anna!"
She ignores me and cuts across three lanes to take an exit. The SUV doesn't even falter and within seconds they are on us again.
"Gun," Anna says and looks at me. I stare back at her stupidly. "Olivia! My gun!"
I nod robotically and pull her gun out as carefully as I can before she snatches it away. Without hesitation she leans out of the window and shoots back at one of their tires.
The car swerves as soon as she does before they respond with two shots of their own. One shattering the back window of the Porsche.
I can barely focus on a word Anna is saying over my own screams. I feel the car shake as she steps on the accelerator and fires again.
I look up just in time to see the SUV next to us. My heart skips as soon as I notice the gun extending at the driver's window and towards me.
I catch a pair of piercing blue eyes beneath a black mask before Anna slams down on the brakes and the car loses control.
