october 18th, 1982.

amelia opened her eyes and stretched as she woke up. she had plans today to go grocery shopping for the house and visiting the library as she loved reading.
she exited her room and entered the living room to her mom staring at the tv in disbelief.
"what's wrong mom?" she asked.
"arne johnson's release is in a few hours, they're actually letting that boy out, i cannot believe this bullshit." cindy said as amelia just looked down, not knowing what to say.
she walked back to her room to find an outfit to wear, deciding on a white blouse with a pair of high waisted brown jeans.
about an hour later she was ready to go. "ma!" she called out, "i'm going to the store for a few things, i'll be back later!"
"okay, don't be gone too long dear." she replied.
amelia left the house and got on her bicycle, and made her way to the store. on her way there they passed by city hall that was crowded with a bunch of people with signs, along the lines of "free arne!" there were many people that believed him, and there were others that didn't, including her mother. "are they waiting for him to be released?" she thought to herself, before peddling again to the store. obviously she was a bit scared considering no one actually knew if he was possessed or it was just a pity excuse.
she was at the local grocery market, picking up a few things as someone tapped her shoulder. she turned around quickly and was surprised as she saw her friend lily.
"oh my god, lily! how are you?" she asked, giving her a hug.
"i'm good amelia, and you?" she replied.
"i'm okay, my moms kinda on the edge though about arne johnson, you know about that? she's been calling him a murderer all morning." she sighed.
"well he did kill someone and stabbed him 22 times." lily said, "but i believe he was actually possessed.. i mean have you seen that mans face? no one that handsome could willingly murder someone." she continued, "and ed and lorraine warren did an interview about the case saying they helped with the possession and said it was actual witchcraft.. scary shit right?"
amelia just slowly nodded her head, still biased about everything. "i don't even know what he looks like, i don't worry about that kind of stuff. but i might stop by the court house on my way back, as crowded as it is." she said, "it was nice seeing you though." she smiled, before going to the checkout isle.
amelia put her bag in the front pocket on her bike, and decided to go to the court house. when she arrived, there was 12 minutes until arne was released. after what felt like forever, a van pulled up which she assumed was arne's transportation. a few moments later, the doors to the court house opened and two police officers walked out, and then a tall man in a suit, with brown hair in cuffs was behind them. "OH MY GOD THATS HIM!" a women next to amelia shouted, and the whole crowd started shouting & cheering. as arne was getting closer to the van, and the crowd began backing up, amelia and him made eye contact. it was held for a few seconds before arne smiled at her and entered the van.
"did he just smile at me..?" she thought to herself. "lily was right, he is kind of cute.. but what if he actually murdered that guy willingly? what if he's actually a murderer?" her mind started racing and she peddled back home.

arnes POV.
arne was in the back of the van, driving back to what he was hoping was his home. "what if people try to hunt me down, am i in danger?" arne asked the security guard.
"no, in fact majority of the town is on your side and believe that you were possessed." the guard replied.
"i still feel terrible, i wish i could go back. i just wanted to save david." arne said in a sad voice.
"it's all over and you don't have to worry about anything anymore, we've kept your apartment running.. but you're gonna need to get a job since you're out and the court won't be paying for it anymore." the guard said, arne nodding.
"how will i get a job? no one will hire me knowing what i've done." arne said.
"luckily we got you a job at menrose cafe, it's two miles from your apartment.. you start tomorrow. you better not lose this job, johnson." the guard said as they were getting closer to his apartment.
arne had a plan that when he's done with parole he was going to move out of brookefield.
they arrived to his apartment, "you're out now boy, don't blow it." the guard said, letting him out of the van. arne nodded, and smelt the fresh air and looked around before going inside. he thought about a face he saw when leaving the court house.. a girl.
"she was so beautiful, i hope to see that face again."
arne thought to himself as he began settling in to his apartment that he missed.
