Destine Amour: Part 1

"Professor Malfoy?" a deep bass called out.

I looked up and trepidation filled my soul. The Minister of Magic himself was standing at my door. I darted a quick glance over to my son, Scorpius, playing quietly in his playpen. Setting down my quill, I rose to my feet and swallowed hard against the lump in my throat. I didn't know why he was here but I knew it could be nothing good. The Minister of Magic simply did not pay call on a former Death Eater, no matter how unwillingly they were branded. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a whirl of black and knew that Severus had left the portrait for some unknowable reason.

A thousand thoughts ran through my mind as I waited for him to speak. Had my pardon been overturned? Had something happened to my parents? Were the Greengrasses filing yet another custody suit? I found, however, the reason was much worse.

"I've come to inform you that you are to be taken in for questioning regarding the making and distribution of an illegal potion with the intent to subjugate and/or control a Ministry Official," Minister Shacklebolt intoned in an authoritative voice.

"I see." I spoke facetiously, then paused -- tilted my head slightly to the left and ran the statement back through my mind, looking at it from every angle and coming up with nothing. "No," I drew the word out into three syllables. "Actually, I don't see. What potion was I suppose to have brewed and what Official am I supposed to be attempting to control?" I finally asked turning my back on the Minister as my son started to cry.

Indifferent to the Minister's presence, I showed all the care and concern I had for my son as if we had been alone. He would notbe raised as I had; he would know having emotions was not a weakness. It is an unsurpassed strength. As Potter had proven ten years ago, when he defeated the Dark Lord. I murmured gently to my son to soothe his worries, not really caring at the moment what they were, only that he was scared. I turned back to the Minister and lifted an eyebrow waiting for an answer to my questions.

I have always respected a man who could hold his tongue, but at the moment, I found myself growing contemptuous of the man planning to keep me from my child based on nothing more than hearsay. I could feel the glower forming as my impatience met continuing silence.

"All of your concerns will be addressed during questioning." Shacklebolt finally spoke.

"Based on your laws, I have the right to know why I am being question by any Auror or Ministry Official." I was unrelenting, there was no way I was going anywhere unless I had to.

"Correct, Professor Malfoy. I believe I would like those answers as well, Minister." The soft brogue of Minerva McGonagall cut through the air like a finely honed scalpel. "Professor Malfoy has not left Hogwarts nor is he taking visitors at this time. Unless you have just-cause... I will have to ask you to leave." There weren't many times in my life I would claim to be happy to see a Gryffindor but this was turning out to be one of the few exceptions.

"As I have already informed you, Professor Malfoy," Shacklebolt ignored Minerva while stressing my honorific. "You are to be taken in for questioning regarding the making and distribution of an illegal potion with the intent to subjugate and or control a Ministry Official." Shacklebolt repeated the charges verbatim, leading me to believe that he rehearsed them. "I have informed you of the reason, as demanded by the law. I do not, however, have to answer any of your questions. Now, if you will please come with me, I would like to get this inquiry over with." The Minister was losing his composure and I was not willing to risk my child by provoking the powerful man's ire.
