Shelter Chapter three

POV Leah

As I gazed upon the scene of destruction before me, I heard myself screaming, yet I could not control myself, I could not stop screaming... Untill someone slapped me, I whipped round to face whoever slapped me, ready to slap back only to find it was Matthew.

Startled I asked "What did you do that for?" forgetting all about the scenery for a second.

"Well you wouldn't stop screaming... so I slapped you." replied Matthew looking unsettled.

"Well...well you slap like a girl!" I snapped desperate for some sort of comeback... and failing.

Then suddenly it hit me, I remembered why I was screaming, why I was hyperventalating so badly... everyone in my class was dead, possibly the whole village, my Mum and Daniel... they must be alive surely. They can't be dead, Mum would never leave me, she was my safety-net if I ever failed at something, couldn't get a job or had no money she would always be there to fall back on. We were going to do so much more, she was meant to be at my wedding crying her heart out and sobbing "That's my baby." wanting to let me move on to a new life, but at the sametime wanting to hold on to me, and never let me leave, making sure I always was her 'Baby'.

I wondered who else was dead, there must be some surviors surely. They can't all be dead within twenty minutes. What sort of bomb could do that? And why would they drop a bomb on a small village in the middle of Somerset anyway?

Suddenly Matthew spoke up,

"We should walk back into the village, to see if there are any surviors."

"Yes let's do that." agreed Haylee.

"Okay." We all replied still looking shell shocked.

"Fine, but I am not looking a... at them." I stuttered gesturing toward the dead bodies, with my eyes closed tightly.

"You don't have to." Answered James with a comforting smile.

"So let's get going then." Matthew concluded, looking at us.

So we started off towards the village. Me glancing away everytime I saw something limp and vaguely human sized lieing on the ground, with blood oozeing out.

As we neared the village, you see the scale of distruction that the bomb had caused. Cars were demolished, the Village church that had once stood proud in all it's glory, above the other buildings, was now reduced to a giant mound of rubble, covering the entire graveyard.

As we passed the school we saw yet more bodies, lieing in piles on top of each other, what made it worse was that they were our school friends and teachers, who an hour ago were laughing and having fun. Yes sure there were people in school I hated, but never enough to wish they were dead, I would never wish that upon someone. Never.
