"Get moving Jen. You can't sit around here all day while we unpack." My mum tapped my shoulder.
"Whatever." I groaned, positoning myself more comfortably on the couch.
"Sam's here." She sighed.
I sat right up and jumped off the couch, rushing to the door. But there was no one there. Only an empty doorway and people carrying boxes inside.
I looked at her, raising an eyebrow.
"I got you up." She laughed, then handed me a heavy box filled with picture frames.
"Mum..." I frowned, looking at the box.
"Whatttt?" She mimicked me, laughing.
"Nothing. I suppose I'll be taking this upstairs?" I pursed my lips, my arms hurting already.
"Yes. Just put it in the spare room. Won't be needing it." She nodded, then walked off to the kitchen.
"Then why do we have it?" I yelled after her, but she ignored me. I sighed once more and staggered my way upstairs, almost tripping on the last step. I walked to the spare room, but paused to look over the railing. You could see downstairs from it. Almost like a bridge, I peered over and saw many men piling boxes on the floor. I was considering running away so I didn't have to carry them. I shook my head and continued my way to the spare room. It didn't have anything in it, apart from a single bed that I used to sleep on when I was younger, before I got a double bed. I liked the room, there was a large window that I could look past and see the ocean right outside. The waves were crashing against the rocks. It was warm today, but I knew I couldn't just abandon my mum to go to the beach.
I put down the box on the bed and opened it, seeing if there were any pictures still in the frame. I searched through but only found one. It was a picture of Sam, my best friend, and I. We are standing on the beach, our wetsuits soaked because we'd just being in the water. He has arm over my shoulder and I was leaning my head on his chest. Many people thought we were dating when they saw that picture, but the truth was that we are just very close friends and have being since we were born. I pick it up and put it on the bed. I had to move away from Sam for a couple years and we could only contact by messages or Skype. I have only just returned to my hometown, Kentucky. I am so excited to see him again, and he should be over in around an hour with his parents.
"Jen, come on down. I think Sam is here early." My mum called. I was confused, thinking she has pulled another trick. Still, I rushed downstairs.
He wasn't there, but another boy was, black hair that looked dry, like he'd just come from the salt-water. His eyes were blue and staring at me. His smirk was almost as charming as the way he spoke to me.
"My name is Josh." He reached out his hand, and although I was speechless, I still took it. His palm was icy cold, but yet so comforting, he held my hand tightly.
"I'm Jennifer. Call me Jen." I smiled at him, and he winked back.
"Will do." He nodded, pulling back his hand.
"Sam told me about you, and since we're neighbours and all, I figured I should meet you for myself. I must say, if you don't mind Ms, but your daughter is certainly more beautiful then Sam ever made her out to be." Josh studied me. My mum creased her eyebrows, watching him, but when he looked at her she smiled politely.
"I'm sure Sam has said great things about me then." I said sarcastically, laughing. Josh shook his head, smiling.
"He has, I didn't mean for it to sound that way." He frowned, but I shrugged.
"I get it. Well, nice to meet you." I replied.
"You too." He looked at me a little longer, and it was hard not to look back. He was extremely handsome-even I could admit that. But there was some part of him that I couldn't look past. Something about him. Something that would never work between us. I couldn't think about that now, of course. I still had time to know him and eventually judge him if it came to.
