I continued to walk and eventually heard rapid footsteps coming behind me. Part of me hoped they were Cale's so I could punch him in the throat.
"Sterling," I heard Michie say calmly beside me when he caught up.
"What?" I snapped and turned to face him. I couldn't handle any more questions right now.
"I was just wondering if..."
"If what? If you can be kind and save the day. I don't need saving, I just need to get away." I continued to walk, and this time I didn't hear any footsteps following me. I knew I shouldn't have yelled at Michie; he had no part in this. He didn't even know about my sister until my big-mouthed opened up. He was probably the only true friend I had. Yet, I didn't care.
I didn't know where I was heading until I was right in front of it. The roller coaster where I felt like for the first time, everything would be ok. I walked up the ramp to the base of the coaster. Luckily there was no line. The perks of having a park shut down for a private event.
"I'll give you ten dollars if you stop the coaster at the top and let me scream as loud as I can" I spoke to the attendant and started to pull money out of my pocket.
"Uhh...I don't think I should do that." He was nervous, and it was kind of cute. His brown hair was falling in his eyes, he kept pushing it to the side, but it always fell back down.
"What about a hundred?"
"Are you serious?" He seemed shocked by my gesture.
"I have never been more serious in my life." I continued to pull out money, only for the attendant to stare at me with a blank expression. After a few more attempts of pushing his hair to the side, I decided to speak.
"Listen...'Eric.' I bent down to look at his name tag. "I'm just asking for one favour. I need you to make it stop at the top and keep it there until the park closes. Say the ride is broken if anyone comes." This Eric character was younger, maybe a senior in high school. Probably not used to dealing with crazy bitches like the one in front of him.
"I really don't think I should." His voice shook a bit when he spoke. Clearly, not a rule-breaking, but didn't like telling people no either, so young and naïve. I bit my cheek, trying to refrain from yelling at any more innocent bystanders today.
"What do you want then? A kiss? two hundred dollars? a puppy? What!?" I could feel my voice rising. I took a second to breathe. He looks down at the floor, avoiding eye contact.
I shook my head. "Forget it. Your loss" I walked back down the ramp; before I got to the end, I yelled back at him, "And buy some hair gel." That made me feel a bit better.
I walked along the back fence of the park and saw a bench hiding in between some bushes, just like I wanted to do right now, so I decided to sit down. I felt like everyone that passed by was staring at me. Did they all know? I bet rumour mill Emily is the one that spread it. I couldn't help but be paranoid. I took out my phone and debating calling my mother, but quickly decided against it. As I was about to put my phone away, I received a text from Maria.
*after party at our dorm! See you soon :)*
I didn't want to go back there; I didn't know what to say to everyone. I put my head in my hands and stared at the ground. I don't know how long I was sitting like this, but I counted 124 pebbles within my line of sight so far. The park speakerphone turned on, making me lose count, stating that 15 minutes left before gates would be closing. I felt stuck. I didn't want to leave, but I was going to be kicked out. Maybe I could hide on this bench till morning.
"Do you need a ride home?" I heard a soft and familiar voice say.
I looked up and saw Michie. Part of me hoped it was Cale. How sick and twisted is that. For some reason, I thought maybe Cale and I were developing a friendship; perhaps there was more, but not now. Yet, here Michie is, being kind. If I were Michie, I wouldn't have come back to me.
