We managed to get through breakfast without a scene. Every time anyone with any sort of testosterone looked in my direction, Cale would try to maul me, and I would have to swat him away like an annoying fly.
We went back to the dorm to get our books for class, which Cale conveniently opted out of going. Using being hit in the head with a blunt object as an excuse. This worked out for my benefit since Michie would be in class, and I needed to talk to him before he heard the news from someone else. After abandoning him last night, it was the least I could do.
I walked into class and looked towards the corner where Michie usually sat, and sure enough, there he was. He looked tired, staring at his textbook but not actually reading it.
I swallowed hard and walked towards the empty seat beside him, and sat down with a thud. Michie didn't look up, but I knew he heard me. This was going to be more challenging than I thought.
"Hi," I said in the friendliest voice I could.
"The next thing out of your mouth better be an apology Sterling Sawyer or you can get up and find a new spot." I could sense the tension in his voice, which I deserved. He still didn't lookup. I had never heard this tone of voice before, and I didn't like it.
"I'm sorry." I admitted with all sincereness. "I shouldn't have abandoned you last night."
"It's not the fact that you left. Which don't get me wrong, sucked. But it's who you left me for...again." The tension in his voice growing. "What happened?" He said softer and with sadness.
"How long did you stay for?" I asked, not knowing if I wanted to hear the answer.
"Long enough to know that you didn't choose me." My heart sunk at his words.
"Again, I'm sorry. He had just got back from the hospital and..."
"Sterling, stop trying to deny. Just admit that you love him and stop playing games with me." His voice now rising. What he needed was closure, so that's what I was going to give him.
"We're dating now." I said as if it was no big deal. Hoping it would ease the tension.
His head snapped up like a gopher. "What?" He practically choked out. "that was....fast.....and unexpected."
"I didn't see it coming either." I confessed.
"Do you love him?" He said a bit louder. I hoped the following words out of my mouth wouldn't ruin any possibility of a future friendship.
"Yes, I love Cale." I saw the hurt in Michie's eyes. We initially bonded over hating Cale, and now he's breaking over my loving Cale.
"You love Cale?" The shrill of Emily's voice made the hair stand up on my arms. Pretty sure in movies that meant something evil was nearby. She turned around in her chair, so she was now facing me. She was bound to spread this rumour quicker than Blondie spreads her legs. I went to say something to deflect her question, but Michie interjected instead.
"And they're dating apparently" I could hear the bitterness in Michie's voice his voice, clearly still hurt by what I just told him.
"Oh really, and when did this happen?" She battered her eyes. I wonder what she would look like if I ripped the eyelashes out of her head.
