AND THAT marked the start of my days as a major. It was one of the lowest military ranks, right next to captain but that didn't bother me in the slightest. It had been a week since accepting my position as a major of unit four; with one hundred and fifty-six men, and two divisions it was no easy job. As hesitant as I was in taking on the position and the responsibilities that came with it; I was eager to learn and experience. I had a second chance at life. I certainly would not leave room for regrets."Eighteen laps around the whole field!" I chanted at them and watched as their feet beat against the soft grass. Sir Itsuki kindly helped me settle in with my new duty. As a colonel he was far more experienced with the ways of the army.
"You're too hard on us major." A man with rich russet eyes, who I knew as Adebiyi whined.
"I know! It feels as though any moment now my legs will fall off, perhaps I can get a nice fief in reparations?" Another man, the youngest in our unit, Gonza, complained and I scoffed.
I chuckled while crossing my arms, "Fear not, you only have fifteen laps left to do."
He pouted his lips, "But I am so tired.."
Arching a brow I challenged him, "If it is true that you are tired, I presume you wouldn't be as talkative?" And in defeat, the two men dashed off back to the fields.
In the meantime, Countess Elizabeth also began warming up to me. In private I would train both Elizabeth and Mali. They didn't have to be the greatest warriors, but knowing some simple self-defence strategies and staying fit was essential. Occasionally, I would bump into Kira who was always excited to see me as he was a part of Sir Itsukis squadron.
"You seem deep in thought," Mukisa bombarded me with his words from the back, shaking me out of my mind. Apparently, I wasn't focused enough to sense him.
"Yeah, I was till you interrupted me."
"Alright major, well, I just wanted to inform you lunch has been served... I'm dying to piss, so I shall join you later."
"Thank goodness, you ought to learn to stop being vulgar, Prince." I scolded him and he waved me off, darting towards the latrines.
Eventually, once my men finished their last lap, I instructed them to have their meal, and prepared jugs of water to refresh them. Unit four consisted of two divisions. It had seventy-eight archers and seventy-eight-foot soldiers alike. They were a good bunch, most of them came from distant tribes far in the jungle with hopes of benefiting from the modernisation of the capital. They were all young, strong, agile with a burning passion to protect our nation.
