Regulus sat alone in his brother's room, staring at the ceiling, softly humming the words to rebel rebel by david bowie. It was one of sirius' new favorites and he would always get right up in Regulus' face to scream the lyrics. But that was when Sirius was still living with him. He was gone now, but Regulus didn't care to admit that. So the comfort of his bed and the soft tune of David Bowie's music would have to do.
Regulus was shit at memorizing things, so his version of the song was a bit more broken up and contained a lot less words but Sirius had taken the record with him to Potter's house so his shit memory would have to be enough.
Orion and Walburga were furious, almost to the point where Regulus could laugh. Sirius hadn't told anyone his plan, at least he hadn't told any of his family. Not even Andromeda, which was surprising. The three had just woke up one day and Sirius was nowhere to be found, most of his clothes gone, posters missing and stupid gryffindor bed decore no longer in its usual place. He had written Regulus a letter though. Told him he loved him but he had to leave and that he hoped reg would be okay on his own and to reach out at any time, blah blah blah.
Regulus couldn't necessarily say he was mad at his brother, he understood what living here was like for him. In the simplest way possible, it was abuse. There was no other word for it, and Regulus only received a fraction of what Sirius endured. So leaving wasn't what pissed Regulus off.
It was the fact that there was no goodbye, no confrontation, no invitation and in the blink of an eye he was gone. What seemed to make it worse was that James was now apparently his brother, or at least that was what Sirius had told everyone. It was like all he had left of his sweet caring brother was in that note and this new Sirius had long forgotten about his biological brother.
It was all an exaggeration, Regulus knew this, but that didn't make him any less mad. What angered him the most however, was the fact that no matter how hard he tried, he still loved Sirius and not a single bone in his body was able to hate him. Which is what brought Regulus here, sitting on Sirius' bed humming a David Bowie song on August 31.
He had packed everything, ready to start his fourth year at Hogwarts. Only this time he had no brother to do it alongside with. Tears, silently streaming down his face, Regulus fell asleep, not looking forward to the next day.
----------
Hauling his trunk beside him, Regulus entered the platform with a dreary look on his face. His eyes sullen and dark due to the lack of sleep and life left in his body. He gave a quick nod to Walburga and Orion, not caring to give them much of an actual goodbye, and headed straight to the train.
Regulus was a skinny, frail looking boy and his overpacked trunk seemed to put up a struggle for him as he silently dragged the heavy object behind him.
"Need any help?" a deep, raspy voice sounded behind him. Regulus looked up to see a very tall, very mature looking Sirius Black. To say he was surprised would be an understatement. Regulus was astonished, befuddled. Sirius had grown easily four or five inches since Regulus had last seen him, placing him at about 5'10 or 5'11. His features had progressed into an older looking guy, alien to Regulus' memory of the immature, young looking boy he remembered. His voice had also gotten a lot deeper and it left Regulus stunned for a moment, wondering if the person in front of him was truly his brother.
"No, I don't, thank you very much." Even though Regulus' heart told him to reach out and wrap his arms around his brother and never let him leave again, his mind told him that Sirius had left him, so he had no right waltzing into his life again like nothing happened.
Despite this, Sirius grabbed the trunk and hauled it into a compartment, placing it in its designated spot. "I told you I didn't need help." Regulus said pointedly.
"It's good to see you Reg. How have you been?" Sirius quickly avoided the glare his brother sent his way.
"Fine. Now get out." The younger stated as he pulled out a book and curled into the corner of the seat. Sirius only stood there stunned for a moment wondering just why Regulus was being so cold toward him. I mean, he knew he was upset because Sirius had left, but he figured Reg would have been a bit more happy to see him. All Sirius had thought about since he left was the next time he would be able to see his brother again, and Regulus being so harsh toward him was foreign and frankly hurtful.
A cheery voice from the doorway snapped the older out of his thoughts as both pairs of eyes looked to see the new visitor, "There you are mate, been looking all over for you! The train's about to leave, you ready?" James Potter stood, staring quizzically at his best friend, not even realizing Regulus was there. As if on cue, James' eyes snapped toward the small boy cuddled in the corner and his face immediately softened. James knew Regulus meant everything to Sirius, and even though the two had had very minimal conversations, it almost felt like he had known him his whole life because of Sirius. "Oh, hey there Regulus. Good to see you!"
Regulus, who was not used to such interactions, or compliments for that matter, blushed much to his embarrassment, and sent a nod toward the tan raven haired boy. He didn't know James quite well, but if he was anything like Sirius he was certain to be trouble. So Regulus took to avoiding the boy as much as he could, which was proven to be very unsuccessful anyways.
Sirius then let out a soft sigh and turned back to Regulus, "I'll see you later, yeah?" to which Reg could only respond with a soft nod, and the two boys vanished, leaving the younger alone as per usual.
Not that he minded, of course. He had always been a loner. I mean, sure he had a few friends, if you could call them that, but he mainly stuck to himself and his books. As he was now, alone in his compartment, reading as the train made its way toward Hogwarts.
----------
Once arriving at the great hall, Regulus sat next to Severus Snape, much to his dismay. So once again he pulled out a book and began to ignore the dreadfully boring sorting of the first years. Although it was pretty hard to ignore the constant booing coming from two particularly loud Gryffindor boys anytime someone was not sorted into their house. Looking over, Regulus observed James Potter with his hands cupping his mouth as to be even louder and his brother holding two thumbs down while shouting. Across from them, a very small looking Peter Pettigrew was bright red from the attention they received but nonetheless was laughing at their antics anyways. Remus Lupin on the other hand, was incessantly hitting Sirius' arm with the book he had been reading while scolding the boys with a lecture Regulus did not have the privilege of hearing.
The four boys were easily the most popular in the school, despite only being fifth years as girls from all grades lined up for a shot at each of the boys. Regulus understood, they were all incredibly handsome, social and very good at pulling pranks which, however you looked at it, could be quite the charm. As long as you weren't the victim of the vicious antic.
Regulus wished nothing more than to feel the acceptance and love from such a close knit group like his brother had. In a way, Regulus was jealous. Not because his brother had so many people around him to make him feel special, but mostly because he knew Sirius was finally free to live a life he wanted to live. And Regulus knew that fate was almost impossible for himself.
