Cold.
So incredibly cold. It was the middle of January and the excitement of the new year was wearing off. It was still cold enough for snow but it's lost it's fun. The holidays are long past and now it was back to work or school. Back to normal life. Maya liked to call this the grey part of winter.
Lucas was bundled up in multiple layers and still felt freezing. He would rather be at home where it was warm but he wasn't letting Maya go shopping alone in New York City. He didn't know why but he felt better knowing she wasn't going out places by herself. He was usually the one to just tag along with her to places nowadays.
"What are you shopping for?" Lucas asks.
"I don't know." Maya replies with a frown.
"You don't know? Why are we out here then?"
"I just couldn't be inside."
"It's freezing out here, Maya."
"You know you can just go whenever you want to, right? I'll be okay." Maya replies.
"I don't trust the people of New York. I'm staying."
Maya chuckles and shakes her head. "Okay then. I promise you that we won't be much longer."
"You always say that, Maya." Lucas chuckles.
It's been a couple more hours and Lucas is starting to get tired. Maya seems to be getting tired as well because she decides that they need a cocoa break. They stop into a small coffee shop and order something hot in the largest cup they had.
"I didn't realize how cold I was." Maya says as she blows on her cocoa.
"You were shivering uncontrollably."
"I was so frozen I couldn't feel anything." Maya replies with a laugh. "I think I'm done shopping. We can go home after this."
"Thank god!" Lucas exclaims.
The two friends sit for a bit and just talk. Lucas is having a great time until he sees someone walk in through the door. He stops talking and Maya notices. She frowns but before she can ask someone walks up to their table.
"We'll, if it isn't Maya Hart."
"Boing!" Maya says with a smile as she gets up to give him a hug. Josh holds on for a bit longer than usual and it makes Lucas angry.
"What are you doing here? I thought you were going back to school."
"I don't go back till next week. Thought I'd spend it with Cory and the family. You upset?" Josh winks and sends a blush into Maya's cheeks.
Lucas raises his eyebrows because that meant Josh was going to be in their lives a lot longer than he'd like. It meant that Maya was going to put more time and energy into Josh. He hated it.
"The absolute opposite actually." Maya replies with a grin.
"Friar. Nice to see you again." Josh turns the attention to Lucas since the both of them seemed to have forgotten he was still there.
"You too." Lucas says as the two of them shake hands.
"I have to get going but I'll see you soon." Josh says.
"Okay." Maya replies giving him a glimmering smile. Lucas gives Josh a nod as he walks back out.
They sit a few more minutes but Maya was texting on her phone the whole time. Lucas prayed that it wasn't Josh texting her. He prayed that she was talking to Farkle or Riley or Zay.
"You ready to go?" She asks absentmindedly, not even looking at him. When Lucas doesn't answer her Maya looks up and notices the frown on his face. He's just staring out the window. "You okay?"
