"Maya, what are you doing?" I ask, walking into Maya's art studio. She's staring up at the shelf full of paints.
"Trying to get the colors down." She says as she attempts to jump up and grab a bottle. She comes back down with a handful of air and a scowl.
"Do you want help?" I ask with a chuckle.
"No. I can do it. Watch." She jumps up again and this time she nicks the edge of the container they paints are in and they come tumbling down.
Paint goes everywhere. I'm in shock at first but then I start to laugh. Maya faces me and she looks like a rainbow threw up in her. Her eyebrows are furrowed and she crosses her arms.
"It's not funny, Ranger Rick!" She exclaims.
"But it really is." I say laughing.
"Fine then you should get a kick out of this." She pours a bottle of blue right over my head and time repeats itself, except it's paint and not a smoothie.
"Now that was unnecessary." I say, still smiling down at her.
"Maybe but so worth it." She says with a giggle.
She bends down and starts picking the fallen bottles up. I grab some towels to try and clean up a little but I just smear paint everywhere.
"You're getting it messier, Huckleberry. Try this-whoa!" I catch Maya just before she falls but the paint is so slippery I end up falling too. Maya looks up at me and laughs, making my stomach fill with a warmth that spreads from my head to my toes. I carefully help her up and we start cleaning. Again.
"Maya, I don't think this is gonna work. We're covered in paint and just getting paint all over the place." I chuckle.
"It was worth a shot. Maybe we should just clean this up later." She says.
She sits down right in the middle of the paint and drags her finger through. I watch her turn the mess into something beautiful. She's doing the New York skyline. Once she's finished she stands up to get a better look at her work.
"It's beautiful." I say.
"Thanks. It's simple but I like it that way."
"Me too. Do we really have to clean it up?" I ask. I hate to watch her wipe this away.
"Yep. Sorry, Ranger Rick, but it's still a mess." She says.
"Can we at least take a picture?"
"Lucas, you know I don't do that. How about I just paint a new one. This can just be the rough draft." She says with a smile and a wink.
"Fine but I'm holding you to this."
"I know." She says with a smile.
