"I don't want to set the world on fire" by The Ink Spots reminds me of Diego lol 😌

You were getting close to your destination, and in no time a rustic wooden cottage was visible. It felt nice to be back home even though you weren't out for too long. You were eager to see your dad and if he was alright, so as soon as your trio got close to the entrance, you got off your horse and stretched your back a little.

"So, here it is... Thanks for the little trip." You smiled, grabbing your stuff from (h/n).

"It was nothing. Hope to see ya around!" Gyro tipped his hat at you with his golden grin.

"Yeah... Stay safe." Johnny smiled.

"You too. I'm cheering for y'all!"

They waved at you and trotted back to their main goal, speeding up to assure a decent spot in the rankings.

Well... It was kinda sad to see them leave, but that's alright. You guided (h/n) to the stable and took care of it before heading inside to greet your father.

"Hey, dad." You spoke softly.

He weakily looked at you from the couch and smiled a bit.

"I brought some food... How are you feeling?"

"My chest is aching for some reason..."

You frowned. Your dad really needed to get a treatment before that could develop into something more fatal, but given your financial situation, that was nearly impossible. The money you made was not enough, but you always tried your best to make as much as you could.
He was the kindest. Even in the darkest times, he would always be there to help his little girl. He would protect you from any harm, and cheer for you when no one else did... It was just your dad and you, mostly because you never knew what happened to the rest of the family or if they even existed in the first place. He always went beyond to see you happy, and even though money could have been a huge problem before, somehow he managed to surpass that, and to give you the life you deserved. You suspected your lives only got stable because of a – filthy, exhausting and long – trip to Italy you two made a couple of years ago. It had something to do with a job opportunity, from what he told you, but you didn't focus too much on that. You were just grateful.

"It's okay... Soon we'll take care of that." You hugged him for a second before making your way to the kitchen so you could make some food.

   ...

Gyro and Johnny finally got to the end of the stage, keeping decent positions. This resting spot was a small village that was willing to offer free services to the racers, and the duo was feasting on a long table stuffed with a huge variety of meals.

"Everyone here is serving for free! What makes you feel special enough to charge Dio??"

"Look, I'm the only one here who knows how to trim and shoe a horse's hooves, so if you're willing to pay for it, I would appreciate it."

They look at where the voices were coming from and spot no one other than you and Diego arguing. Mostly him, actually.

"A nobody like you has no right to talk to me that way!"

"Well, I'm trying my best to sustain myself. Not everyone is ridiculously rich, but I wouldn't expect you to understand that."

That triggered something in him. Diego had a rough childhood and he wouldn't have became 'ridiculously rich' if it weren't for his affinity with horses. Of course, you didn't know that, but you were trying to prove your point. He grit his teeth and glared daggers at you.

Deciding to step in, Gyro headed over to you with some unfinished buns filling his large hands.

"Hey, (y/n)! I was not expecting to see you here!"

"Oh, hi Gyro! Need some grooming for your baby?" You motioned to Valkyrie.

"Ah yeah! Same for Slow Dancer."

"Cool, where is Johnny?"

"He's over there at the table... Come on, I have some specific requests for Val."

He led you away from Diego and to a stable where the animals were. While he ate and blabbered about the race, you held Val's hoof between your knees and brushed it with a steel wire brush. Johnny headed inside for a second just to quickly greet you and mention that they were serving wine. Gyro ran back outside and left you and the equines for a while.

While you worked, you bent over to pick a hoof knife when a bag of coins was tossed at your feet, startling you. Looking up, you saw Diego, who refused to make eye contact.

"I'm assuming you want me to take care of your horse?"

"Pfft no, I'm actually interested in your body."

"What the... That ain't the service I'm offering."

"Learn to get a joke! I'm obviously here for Silver Bullet!" He made a disgusted face and plopped down on a stool.

"Well... You need to learn a thing or two about humor."

"I might learn a lot with the joke in front of me."

You raised your eyebrow and got back to work silently, hearing him grunt.

"Ugh... How long are you gonna take?"

"I don't know."

"You're so annoying it physically hurts..."

"Well excuse me, I'm trying to do a good job."

"Yeah... Trying."

"Look, who hurt you? This is getting ridiculous..."

"Shut up and do your job!"

Huffing loudly, you did as told until it was his horse's turn.

"I hope you know what you're doing."

"Let the professionals work, will you?"

"As if I had to listen to what someone like you says... Someone needed to put you in your bloody place..."

"Oh, what place?"

"The place where you don't fucking question me and do what you're told." He growled.

"You should be grateful that there is someone to groom your horse! You're not superior than anyone, Diego..."

"You talk a lot of horse shit, did you know that? To go and test me like that, you're really asking for it!"

You took a deep breath not to say anything too stupid, but he didn't like that. He roughly grabbed you by the jaw and looked into your eyes with a scowl, which caused you to gasp in surprise. The horse's hoof fell from between your knees and you tried to push him away.

"Don't talk about things you don't understand, sweetheart. You don't know me."

"Ugh... G-get off!"

"You know... You kinda look cute like that... Squirming around as I hold you in place."

His other gloved hand caressed your cheek and ran its thumb across your lower lip, ignoring your pitiful attempts at getting rid of him.

"What do you say about a little truce, hm? I'm sure we both would have some fun with that~..."
