When I opened my eyes, the room was completely black. I unlocked my phone and shined its bright light across the room. Mel and Aide were sleeping in the bed next to me, and Jake was nowhere to be seen. I got off the couch and walked through the bedroom door, into Jake's room, and then out to the living room. I turned the lamp sitting on the desk next to the tv on the lowest setting so the light was very dim in the room.
I, then, decided to actually look at my phone. The screen said that it was 3:46 am and showed no new calls or text messages. I let out a silent sigh, thinking that I really missed my mom and just wanted to hear her voice to make sure she was okay. I knew that she said in her voicemail that they wouldn't hurt her, but I always thought of the worst possibilities.Just then, I heard footsteps. They were light but definitely noticeable. I looked up to see Jake quietly tiptoeing into the living room.
"Hey," he said quietly. "What are you doing up?"
"Just thinking," I said. "And I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep."
"Do you want some tea or something?"
"Sure," I smiled. He walked out to the kitchen and made me a cup of tea. I was surprised that he did so, because everyone always made those 'a woman's place is in the kitchen' jokes, which I thought was crap. When he came back into the living room, he had two cups in his hand. He handed one to me and kept the other one for himself. I sipped the tea out of my cup as he slid down into the couch beside me.
"So whatcha thinking about?" He asked.
"Stuff," I replied, not sure whether I actually wanted to talk about it or not. He chuckled.
"Well, that's a very broad answer. You know you can talk to me, right? I've always got an ear open."
I looked up at him, staring into his green eyes. I didn't say anything for a minute, but the longer I stared into his eyes, the more butterflies I got in my stomach. I smiled, not able to break the lock of our stare. I, then, realized how much I actually trusted him. It felt weird because I didn't really know that much about him, but at that moment, I felt like I knew him inside out. And it felt good. As we sat there, I begged with my eyes for him to kiss me.
Jake caressed my cheeks with his hands and slowly leaned in for a sweet, soft kiss. As our lips touched, I felt a spark flow through my entire body. The kiss didn't last nearly as long as I had hoped, but I was grateful that it had happened. He leaned back and just sat there, staring into my eyes. I saw his eyes sparkle a bit as he smiled at me, and I felt the butterflies flutter in my stomach.
"You're an amazing person, Soph. I really do like you. Whatever happens, I'll always be by your side." Jake said, his eyes never leaving mine. I smiled shyly.
"Thank you, Jake." I said back.
"You probably should try to get some more sleep," he said as he playfully punched my shoulder. "It's too early for you to be up." I nodded and slowly got up off of the couch. As I made my way back through his room, he followed me back and plopped onto his bed. He whispered 'goodnight' as I reached my room and shut the door. I smiled to myself, crawled back onto the sofa, and fell asleep.
