MEL
Steve and I make it inside, taking HYDRA agents as they come. Him with his shield, and me with my powers, both incorporating hand-to-hand combat. I've barely received any noticeable bruises, but I can see Steve's cheekbone showing a cut.
The halls are dark and musty, with pipes leaking all around. The lack of light makes it hard to see if anyone is hiding in the turns.
"Tony, did you find it?" Steve asks into the comms keeping his shield in front to protect us, me behind him looking over my shoulder for any incoming.
"I would be having a party if I did, don't you think?" Tony responds.
I roll my eyes "Less sarcasm and more attention please" I hiss at Tony. I can just sense him rolling his eyes in his suit.
Steve and I keep walking, all the hallways seeming to go only one way since there's no need to split up. I don't hear any agents rushing to protect the core of this place. The only sound is the dripping from the pipelines above us and our feet.
Any time we make a turn Steve stops me from going further until he checks it's all clear. He's nervous, attentive. His breathing seems deep, yet ragged. I can sense he's anxious for Tony to find the stone and call it a day. I just hope the stone is actually inside the orb.
"Amelia" I hear someone whisper in my ear. I look to my left but there isn't anyone there. "Amelia" I gasp.
"What's wrong?" Steve asks looking at me, checking my figure for any bruises.
"You don't hear that?" I shiver as the whisper tickles my ear once again. Steve looks at me then around us.
"Mel, there's no one here, just us" He puts a hand on my shoulder reassuring me.
"Come" The whispers continue, my feet move towards it, my mind not focusing on Steve asking me to stop. My feet pick up the pace not listening to Steve behind me. I sprint, not being able to stop myself. Left to right in each turn, no one in sight.
"Amelia" The whisper intensifies, ringing in my ear. "Amelia" I can't stop until I know where it comes from. The whispers, my feet hitting the ground while I run, Steve running after me, calling after me, my heart beating fast from it all. "Amelia"
At the end of the last hall, probably in the deepest part of this base, there's only a door and I'm running towards it. Before I can reach the handle, I feel someone pulling my arm and waist taking me out of my trance. Steve. I pant, my lungs asking for a break.
"Hold on," Steve says, his hand still on my waist holding me in place, which, not gonna lie, makes me feel different, a good different "We don't know what's on the other side of the door" He leans against it trying to listen to anything from the inside. I'm still trying to catch my breath, if he ran after me he seems fine.
He tries to open the door but it appears to be locked. He positions his shield against the handle and breaks it, then kicks the door letting us inside.
"You do know I could've done that with these?" I smirk letting my fingers form small rays of energy for him to see. He looks at my hands, his mouth agape and I chuckled at his reaction.
When we step inside there's only one thing that catches my eye.
The Power Stone being balanced by its own energy in the orb. The orb is being held by two claws, one for each half.
I walk towards it, but Steve stops me once again.
"The stone is visible, you can't touch it" He warns.
"We'll get to know each other better once this mission is over, Cap" I force myself out of his reach and walk towards the stone "Guard the door," I say handing him one of my guns.
His eyes widen but he does as he says taking the gun. "Tony, we found it, where are you?" I hear my brother question why we got there before him, my fault possibly, but I'm too focused on the glowing stone in front of me.
I inch closer to the stone, put my hands on each half of the orb, but they don't move. I use my own energy to disable the claws and hold the orb in my hand closing it. I feel rays of energy seep through my veins, something I've grown familiar with.
"All done, Captain" I say looking towards him with the orb in my hand.
Steve looks at me astonished. He moves a hand to his earpiece not moving his eyes from mine. "We're heading out".
