MEL
The cold November air brushes my face as the Avengers and I step out of the quinjet, the briefcase with the orb in my hand. I walk through the hallways of the Avengers tower towards Banner's lab.
"Mel, wait up!" I hear Steve calling behind me, he matches my pace as we walk to the lab. "I didn't want to bring it up in the quinjet, but what was that back there? Is everything ok?" He asks, his eyes filled with concern. We step into the elevator, him hitting the pad to where we are supposed to go.
I sigh remembering my actions at the base. That's the thing. Where they even my own actions? All I remember is hearing a voice and the next thing I know, my feet are carrying me through the underground halls. I couldn't bring myself to stop until I was at the door with the orb behind it. With the power stone, the one in the briefcase I'm holding. It's as if the stone wanted me to reach it.
"Mel?" Steve pulls me out of my thoughts. I look up at him. The doors to the elevator open and we head through the hallways, reaching the lab door. The others have gone to update Fury on how the mission went. Do I even know how to explain myself?
"I-" I stop walking before entering the lab, trying to find the words to say and Steve stands in front of me. His helmet is off, though he still has his suit on. I can actually take notice of his features. His tousled hair from being hidden in his helmet, his bright blue eyes looking right into mine trying to find an answer. "Would you believe me if I told you that I'm not sure what happened back there?"
"I understand, will you tell Tony tho?" Steve continued walking opening the door for me to the lab.
"Is it ok if we keep it between us? For now at least. I don't wanna worry him"
Steve nods understanding. "It'll be our secret" The corner of his lips turns up and I return the half-smile.
I set the briefcase on the table and there's a bit of awkward silence between Steve and me while we wait for Bruce Banner to appear. I shift my gaze towards Steve and he quickly gazes away from me, looking down, possibly wondering about what happened earlier.
The door opens revealing my brother and Dr. Banner, both too invested in their own conversation to notice any of us there.
"So you're not gonna say hi?" I say getting their attention.
They both look towards me and Tony rolls his eyes with a hint of a smile on his lips while Banner lets his smile shine through. "Mel Stark! It's so good to see you!" He walks up to me and we share a hug.
"You two know each other?" Steve chimes in as we release the hug.
"After New York, Tony and I did some work together, that's when I met Mel"
Steve nods. "What are you planning to do with the stone, Dr. Banner?" He asks focusing on the important subject.
I see Tony opening the briefcase to start working with Bruce.
"We want to see what exactly it is that H.Y.D.R.A wanted to do with this, they probably wanted to extract power from it for their weapons, just like they did with the tesseract, you remember that?" Banner explains to Steve and he looks down remembering his first encounters with H.Y.D.R.A.
"Alright that's enough," I say trying to make Steve less uncomfortable "you need to be careful with it, we all know the other guy can save you, but remember Tony's by your side, I don't want anything to happen to him"
Bruce sighs and nods getting the system ready.
"Awe, see I knew you loved me, sis" Tony puts his hand against his heart pretending to be touched by my worries. I just roll my eyes silently regretting that I said that in front of him. Steve chuckles behind me.
I'm about to say my goodbyes to let the nerds do their work, when a crashing sound comes from above, multiple following.
Steve and I look at each other "Suit up, Tony" He says not leaving my gaze. We both sprint towards the elevator.
What the hell just happened?
