Sophia's POV
Unexpected surprise...
I took Gracie back to my apartment after Christina showed up to Zak's house and decided to stay there as if she owned the place, I remembered that today was Zak's birthday so I planned a surprise party for him. Aaron and the others decided to help me since it was a last minute idea,it wasn't much but it was better than spending a birthday alone.
I waited for Aaron to get back with the cake while Billy and Jay set out the food, I seen him walking in the room ten minutes later with the cake in his hand and a serious look on his face.
Aaron: I sent him a text but he didn't respond so hopefully he will show up.
Sophia: maybe so... And guys I know that our breaking up was a shock to you all but please don't mention it, I don't want it to upset him.
Billy: whatever decision you both made did shock us but you and him deserve to be happy even if things didn't work out between the two of you.
Sophia: we tried to make things work but my wanting to spend the rest of my life wasn't what he wanted for me and I accepted that.
Aaron: perhaps remaining friends is better than not talking to each other, you know him better than we do and if it isn't crossing a line than maybe you deserve better.
Zak: she does deserve better, it's why I don't want her spending the rest of her life with me.
I turned around as soon as I heard his voice only to see a single tear run down his face, something that I haven't seen him do since we were in school.
Sophia: you deserve to be happy too...
Things were awkward between us the remaining evening and eye contact wasn't exchanged between us so I decided to leave before the guys did.
Sophia: I better get home, it is getting late.
I handed the leash to Aaron and walked outside as quickly as possible but didn't make it to my truck before he called my name.
Zak: Sophia wait...
Sophia: you should be inside enjoying your party...
Zak: it won't be the same without you...
Sophia: what do you want me to do Zak? I can't keep pretending that I'm happy...
Zak: I don't want you to pretend Sophia, if you aren't happy why do you continue sticking around?
Sophia: because that is what true friends do, I know what would happen if I left and never returned...
Zak: I don't expect you to keep a promise that you made to yourself and you don't have to stay on my part, I will understand if you leave and never come back.
Sophia: I don't think we should be friends after I leave this place.
Zak: it would be better if we never see each other again.
Sophia: so be it...
He was about to walk back inside before he stopped in his tracks and looked back.
Sophia: happy birthday Zak, I hope you find what it is you are looking for in life...
I got in my truck and drove away before he had the chance to say something else, I was foolish for ever thinking that we could be friends, leaving this town was a choice that I regret because I always return no matter what happens to me.
